Nah, just put all your important stuff on them and forget to backup. Then stop the fan in the powersupply, lets see how long it can go...

My case is off, so the power supply fan doesen't do much.

How long can a powersupply go without the fan cooling it?

I have a machine that's in that situation and I can't change the powersupply until the weekend, I hope nothing bad happens...

I had a power supply fan die and I didn't replace it for about 4 months.

I don't think it's a big deal unless it's really hot.

whoops.....

my drives are squeezed into my case with absolutely no room inbetween them. But then I got a really cheap case so there isn?t much I can do about it.

Another thing is that I have the infamous IBM Deathstar 75GXP. It's 3 years old and still chugging along.

Okay, thanks. It's my sister and her family's machine. When I was up at their place last week I noticed that it wasn't working just as I headed for home, so I couldn't do anything. The next chance I get to fix it is this coming weekend.
I'm just hoping that it survives...

Put one drive in a 5.25" bay.

I control all my fans (including powersupply fan) with a fanbus and usually have it set to a low rpm "stealth mode" for normal apps and krank em up to full speed for games. After one of my gaming sessions, I turned the fans back down to stealth but unintentionally turned my powersupply fan off. I think it ran for a good 20 minutes before the power cut out. I thought I had screwed myself over by killing my powersupply, but I didn't smell anything burning. I waited a couple of minutes for it to cool and attempted to turn it on. It worked! i guess the powersupply had a built in kill switch that sensed that the temps were getting too high.

Enermax I love you!

Wow, the little case fan actually helped a lot.

It's 96.8F in my room now, but I can have my fingers on the drive infinately without it actually burning. :D

Position the hard drives so that they are mounted vertically (so that the discs inside spin like a motorcycle's). Aim a fan through the spaces. You might need to cut the drive bay.
