my comp is at 1605mhz, my xp 1700 is at 42 C idle. the case is at 36 C. I have an epox 8kha+ with latest bios. my voltage is at 1.76 V. I was only able to make my fsb to 146mhz. anything above that, the comp either locks up at boot or locks up when i run 3dmark. should i be able to o/c even more? the reason i ask is because some people in other threads have gotten their 1700 a lot higher. is there anything i can do to get my cpu to go higher?

It's hard to say since you know that overclocking is never guaranteed. However, you can try a few things to determine if your overclock is really being hindered by the processor instead of some other component. Some motherboards don't really like FSBs higher than what they're spec'ed to run at. Although 146MHz isn't really that much higher than the spec for that mobo (133MHz), it could be a possible suspect. Also, what kind of RAM are you using? If it's PC2100, then it is possible that the RAM just doesn't want to go much higher than 133MHz DDR. If you really want to find the limit of your processor then I suggest you unlock it and keep the FSB at 133MHz and just raise the multiplier in small increments. That way you'll be isolating the problem to only the processor since everything else will be running in spec. Of course if it still won't go any higher than 1.6GHz then you'll just have to live with it.

my multiplier is locked...blah. yeah, i have pc 2100. and according to everyone, epox 8kha+ is supposed to be THE overclocking mobo to get. so i imagine that it should be able to hit over 150fsb.

No, it's normal to clock your xp 1700 at 1.5GHz...
You're not doing anything obviously wrong so I think you'll probably have to live with it...

Sounds like your Memory. What brand is it?

Then your memory is probably holding you back. Crucial and Corsair memory can usually handle the higher FSB speeds.

overclocking all depends on a lot of thinks... the 8Kha was good to about 166 fsb... the via chipset was holding it back from higher wasn't made to go that fast on the FSB... your chip could be a older 1700+ and those were only good for 1.6-1.7 Gig... the ram might not handle a high fsb thats a good possibility right there...

RAM is your problem I would guess. I can't really do anything with my PC, and if I give my RAM aggressive timings the computer won't boot at all. Does the RAm check, then stops, and this is without overclocking.

I have one of the 1st 1700s to come out, I can only hit 1.63. I'm sure it's not RAM, I got a stick of Corsair PC3200 in there. The old XPs suck, it's the newer ones that o/c nice
