I can only imagine how many years Dr. Atkins added to my life

I'm a parent of a 7 and 10 yr old.

The main modification we've made to the kids' diet is to cut back on sugar. They are both at an ideal weight.

My wife is French so we were already in the habit of eating a healthful diet including cheese, green salad, high quality meat, fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

For me, it was just a question of eliminating sugar, white flour, processed foods and starchy fruits and vegetables from my diet.

Dear god thank you.

So many parents shove so much sugar down their kids throats it's a wonder they don't develop diabetes by the time they're ten. I've seen babies holding two-scoop ice cream cones and drinking out of 64-ounce soda cups. Scary.

I eat and drink normally but in moderation,no need to thank Dr Atkins for anything here🙂

Can you describe what you mean by eating "normally". On the Atkins diet you eat high quality meat, fish, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, nuts, olives, pastas and breads made without white flour, etc. Plus, there are plenty of deserts you can eat by substituting Splenda for sucrose.

What's not normal about that?

I still don't buy the Atkin's diet thing.

And remember, fruits are sugar, which are carbs.

Funny you mention that. Check out this thread:

Yes, but they not refined. Personally, I like to eat berries, kiwis, apples, and grapefruit. I eat fruit with every meal.

Limiting Calories, practicing moderation in eating, and exercise are pretty much all one needs (baring medical issues) to keep the weight off.

Got to love fad diets. Yeah, I haven't tried it, so sue me. But you know how I stay in reasonable shape? I work out 5 times a week and eat and drink in moderation. If I didn't do that, I'd be a fatass. But it's really not all that hard if you eat and drink normal servings and work out. On the other hand, I firmly believe all these "eat a ton of this but none of that" kind of diets are really unhealthy. Not exactly a balanced diet.

You consider eating high quality meat, fish, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, nuts, olives, pastas and breads made without white flour, etc. a fad.

A fad is the mid-late 20th and 21st century diet. Man was not intended to eat processed loaded with trans fat and refined carbohydrates.

I'm on day 2 of induction. 🙂 This is my first time giving Atkins a try, but it's worked great for some of my aunts and uncles... So I figured, why not for me. I'm 245 and 6'3", I'm aiming for between 220 and 225 by the new year.

And your pics just confirm that I'm doing the right thing here. 🙂

You don't need Atkins for that. I was 260 and 6'3" - excercise and better eating brought me down to 215 (and I could still loose some)

Edit: to add timeframe, took about 5-6 months.

Not as a main staple of their diet but eating refined sugars/Carbs occasionally isn't harmful. What's the use of working out hard, watching your weight and keeping in shape if you can't splurge occasionally?

What do you mean by eating better? What modifications did you make to your diet?

Not eating like it's the last day on earth? Basically portion control. No need to eat for 4 people when it's only the wife and I 🙂

maybe this is "better eating"? I'm not specificially following atkin's program, but about two weeks ago I decided to shift the balance a bit and reduce the amount of sugar/bread/rice in my diet. I've dropped about 8 lbs so far and it's been effortless. <shrug>

Reducing the amount of refined carbohydrates is the crux of the Atkins program. You're basically doing it.

I didn't change the amount of daily bread/rice/potatoes. More the amount of meat and other bad things (icecream anyone? DQ!)

I'm a little confused. I suspect that the "bad foods" you're refering to are loaded with sugar and other refined carbs.

Congratulations for your efforts. However, you should see the menu available for my kids to eat at their great grandma's and granparent's house. Nothing but crap: donuts, kolaches, sweet rolls, chips, and on and on. Then when I try to discipline the kids, I am an a** for doing so. Think I might just eat myself into obesity and then sue her for making me fat.

I'm on day 2 of induction. Am I supposed to feel hungry all the time? I'm eating at least as much as I was before, just no carbs and more meat, but I'm still feeling hungry. This sucks. How long till this feeling goes away?
