Woohoo,
so after wiring in the S6 steering wheel into my a6 pics, the tiptronic buttons would only work when i put the shifter lever to the right (tip mode).
So after some poking around, I found a solution in the form of a 12v configurable timer delay relay. Basically I set up the relay so that when I click the tip buttons, it throws the car into tip mode and when the timer expires the car goes back into drive.
The end result is being able to shift completely from the steering wheel... woohoo. Here's the write up in case there are audi people on the board linkie
