I got my landline with AT&T disconnected because it was never used and it was hitting $20/month just sitting there. It turns out I qualify for dry-loop DSL where I live and I can get 768kbps down for $20/month to supplement my EVDO line with Verizon (would like to keep this alive for mobility reasons). Has anyone gotten dry-loop DSL from AT&T and what kind of fees do they charge in addition to the rate plan I sign up for?

I have cable high speed internet with no telephone or tv and, at least for me, there are no added taxes or surcharges.

When I used to have DSL, there was an option for just dial tone service (like $5 per month) and charge for every call made. Even without any calls, still ended up being about $15 / month with taxes, etc.

I use Page Plus Cellular pre-paid cellular because I don't make many calls and averages out to about $5/month: http://cellguru.net/prepaid_compare.htm

I pay an extra $7 per month for the dry loop. My understanding from the provider is that the extra charge depends on where you live. Mainly dependant on population density. The higher the density the lower the cost.

When I signed up for AT&T dry-loop DSL, it was $34/month for 3.0Mbps down, whereas the regular DSL was $29/month (plus around $16 for the measured land line). They add 0 fees to it. I signed up in May 2008, and I have paid exactly $34/month ever since. I couple that with T-Mobile prepaid cell phones (8.8 cents/minute with $100 card after 12%-off coupon on ephonecard.com) and MagicJack, which is $20/year. It's been working great for me so far.
