man i must have gotten a deal or something
i get cable from RR 2.5/384 for 40$/m
guess im lucky. i actually hate comming back to college cause the internet is slow compaired to my home
Okay, I'm gonna demand Roadrunner move into my area.
Comcast here charges $40 per month for 1.5/300, plus that ONLY comes with 1 IP - An extra IP is another 5 bucks.
I just called up WOW and got Cable AND internet for $60, also 1.5/300, but it comes with 3 IPs and, of course, cable TV.
I'd KILL for 2.5/384. Seriously, you name it, start laying the pipe, and he/she'll be wacked by the time I'm pinging. ;-)

heheh. i only have 1 ip. i think a second one is 5 or 10$ more. i only need 1 tho. useing a router is fine for splitting the connection

Just think of it like the way dial-up access is...you would pay the phone co. for your regular phone-line then you would pay AOL $25/month (or whatever they're up to now) for the ISP service.

See, you don't have to pay AOL for internet access. AOL is a proxy through which one views the internet. You only need to pay for the pipe. e.g. Verizon or Comcast, anything else they sell you is a scam.

well, I guess I think i see your point after re-reading, however he's talking about dsl so the aol and phone thing doesn't apply. He says that Verizon will install a line and give him the modem. If that doesn't mean that he also gets an IP and therefore an active connection, they've pulled a new stunt. Which is entirely possible.
They're both the same deal...you pay somebody for the actual line for the connection and somebody for the internet access. They're still both sold seperately if you want. You can pay the phone co. for JUST the DSL line and somebody else for the IP address.

But, yes, you would get the modem from whoever is providing your actual internet access so if you get a modem from Verizon they would be your ISP as well. 😉

Heh... Supposedly it's 5$/ip here, but their system is broken.. any computer you hook up gets an IP. 😛

am I missing something here? doesn't ISP stand for Internet Service Provider? so if you get Verizon DSL, aren't they your ISP?
For a DSL connection, you need to pay for the line and an ISP. The line belongs to whoever you local phone co. is and the ISP is anyone who supports DSL internet access. They don't HAVE to both be from the phone co. but it's easier that way.

Just think of it like the way dial-up access is...you would pay the phone co. for your regular phone-line then you would pay AOL $25/month (or whatever they're up to now) for the ISP service.

yah, I understand that. What I mean is the originator of this post sounded like he was getting internet access at 1.5/128 from Verizon for ~$30/month. I thought this meant Verizon would be his ISP and give him a 1.5/128 line all for ~30/month. So does ~$30/month pay for just the 1.5/128 line and then he has to pay more for Verizon to be his ISP or is the ~$30/month for the 1.5/128 line + Verizon as his ISP?

Curious about this because when I move apartments I want to try to get in on the 1.5/128 Verizon DSL for $34.99/month but if that's just for the line and then I have to pay more for Verizon to be the ISP, then I may reluctantly go with with Comcast.

Road Runner is pissing me off. I'm almost certain my modem is crapping out because the connection keeps dieing. The only way to restore is to unplug the modem, wait a few seconds then plug it back in. I've never had that problem until yesterday. Now I have to explain to some technician coming tomorrow and hope he has some sense.

The modem is probably 3 years old as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the problem...
