I called comcast about a lower rate

and tried to play the verizon competition card, and here's what was said:

me: I'm considering getting dsl, verizon will give me internet access and over 12 months (no contract), I'll pay $30 a month what with the first month free, 30 for the next 2 months, 35 a month thereafter, free modem, rebate, etc.

him: but that doesn't include an ISP - they don't tell you that and you'll need to get that in addition to the internet access.

me: well they're giving me email, what more do I need?

him: no, you won't be able to use just 'internet access' you'll have to get an ISP as well

me: (looking at the verizon page) well it says it comes with MSN8 (not that I'd ever use that crap)

him: and the speeds they give you, you'd pay about $50 a month from verizon to get the speeds comparable to what comcast is giving you.

me: but it says I'll get either 1.5/128 or .75/128 depending on your relative location

him: no, its the .75/128 you'd be getting (I'm currently getting 1.5/256 from comcast)

me: do you have an (anal) retention department?

him: yes, that's me

me: If I were to cancel my internet service with you, how soon would the billing stop?

him: if you were to cancel now, it would stop today

me: okay, lemme do some research - buh bye

so, what he said about the ISP thing is bull, right?
I guess the only way I'll get their attention is to order the DSL (30 day no-cost return option) and see if they offer a lower rate (curently $43/mo)

Don't cancel the cable till the DSL is installed. You can order it but you might not be able to get it after they try.

$35/month would be a pretty good rate for Verizon 768/128 if it includes the ISP.

Here (Portland, OR area) I think it's $50/month now including ISP. I've been on since the dawn of time here so I'm at $32.50 for the line and $7.49 for Verizon as my ISP. It may be that $50/month is with no contract and that the $40/month rate has a 1-year contract...

I could have gone with somebody else (like Earthlink) as the ISP but I figured since the line belongs to Verizon, I'd keep it in the family. In the event of a technical difficulty, I don't really need two companies trying to point the finger at each other. With this setup, it would be Verizon's fault either way. 😀

am I missing something here? doesn't ISP stand for Internet Service Provider? so if you get Verizon DSL, aren't they your ISP?

what the heck was the Comcast guy talking about? are they really that dumb?

I thought cable ISPs didn't "allow" file/gameservers and that some would even charge extra for excess giggage? What else would more than 128 upstream be good for?

Yes you get verizon as your ISP, at least I did in West LA. You get email, news, etc. It's just comcast FUDing you to try and keep you signed up.

I'm confused. wtf did he mean by ISP?

ISP is "Internet Service Provider". If you order Internet access from Verizon and they install a pipe which you can ping through, ta da, you have ISP.

Does he mean "Browser" in which case Internet Explorer, as you may know, comes preinstalled.

~ah, I'm a bit late with this observation.
sorry, I'll read the thread first next time

<---lying.

Contact me when DSL is available in my area!

This is what I have seen from both GTE and now Verizon since 1998 when I check for DSL availability. Meanwhile I am quite happy to pay Comcast for what has turned out to be great service after some initial problems.

For a DSL connection, you need to pay for the line and an ISP. The line belongs to whoever you local phone co. is and the ISP is anyone who supports DSL internet access. They don't HAVE to both be from the phone co. but it's easier that way.

Just think of it like the way dial-up access is...you would pay the phone co. for your regular phone-line then you would pay AOL $25/month (or whatever they're up to now) for the ISP service.

See, you don't have to pay AOL for internet access. AOL is a proxy through which one views the internet. You only need to pay for the pipe. e.g. Verizon or Comcast, anything else they sell you is a scam.

~Edit

well, I guess I think i see your point after re-reading, however he's talking about dsl so the aol and phone thing doesn't apply. He says that Verizon will install a line and give him the modem. If that doesn't mean that he also gets an IP and therefore an active connection, they've pulled a new stunt. Which is entirely possible.

the comcast dude aint bs you. i have verizon dsl, i have to pay line+Isp, even though Verizon is my phone company and ISP company. Total should be around 40 ish.

That bites, I'm in the 703 area and I get verizon DSL for 29.99/month. 1.5mbps/128kbps

No, the ISP stuff isn't BS. Are you all stupid? 😛

But if it's 30$ with ISP, then that's a good deal.

When I had DSL, it was 32$/mo for the DSL line and then 25$/mo for the ISP I was with.

You can choose any ISP you want.. as long as they have DSL service in your area. I chose to stay with the ISP I had on dialup so I could keep my email address, it was only 5$/month more than using Verizon as my ISP.

Okay, I'm gonna demand Roadrunner move into my area.

Comcast here charges $40 per month for 1.5/300, plus that ONLY comes with 1 IP - An extra IP is another 5 bucks.

I just called up WOW and got Cable AND internet for $60, also 1.5/300, but it comes with 3 IPs and, of course, cable TV.

I'd KILL for 2.5/384. Seriously, you name it, start laying the pipe, and he/she'll be wacked by the time I'm pinging. ;-)

We get 1.5/256, but it's around 55$/mo with free Basic Cable.
