Current System specs
BFG Geforce 6800 OC vanilla (unlocked 16p, 6v), Athlon 64 3400+, 1 gig ram, antec true 480 psu, asus k8n mb (I realize I will need to grab a socket 754 pci express mobo). Viewsonic VX924 - MAX Resolution of 1280 x 1024.

I game at 1280 x 1024, I do like to be able to turn on AA an AF, but it's not entirely necessary, I can enjoy a game without it. The max I will spend is 300, although 200 is better. I'm not entirely sure how much is overkill, ya know, why spend 300 if it's overkill for my setup. What oh what should I do?

Due to the current developments with the RAM on the 7900GTO I'd have to say the X1900XT is your safest bet

I wasn't aware of that one. Added to poll. Also, I'd appreciate if everyone would give a short explanation as to their recommendation. I know it's work, which I certainly would never encourage, but it does help me more. Thanks everyone in advance.

First I own a Dell, so I look for for cool & quiet and the 7900GTO did the trick.
Otherwise I'd have picked the 1950xtx (I know it's not in your polling) for my AMD customized gaming rig.

OP- To draw more votes or audiences you'd need to add a small print such as "polling inside" with your thread title.

i would wait and save up some cash to build a new system. Buying a new socket754 motherboard now leaves a bad taste in my mouth...

I definitely understand where you're coming from, i know socket 754 is dead. But I'm definitely not an early adopter, I wait until I can buy a game for 19.99 before I get it (if that tells you anything).
I plan to upgrade to dual core probably in another year or so, as my current system gets the job done fine, except of course for the slow down in games that I'm starting to notice, hence the post.
For now, I'm just lookin for a video card upgrade to get me by until the dust settles with DX10, windows vista, quad core comin out, all that good stuff.

Thanks for the replies everyone, keep em comin!
