I call for the death of these legacy components!

Legacy components such as IDE, PS/2 ports and PCI slots should be set on the guillotine! I call for your support of the death penalty! Who is with me? Vote!

Absolutely no for PCI, imho. Components that are only now gradually moving over to PCIe:

- sound cards (there are a few ASUS Xonar cards and a handful of X-FIs that are PCIe, but most are still PCI)
- WiFi cards
- TV tuner cards

There are too many very modern components that are still being made for PCI. You can have PS/2 and IDE though, for all I care -- I haven't used those for years.

Amazingly legacy devices still have some use and regardless of how limited this use is you?ll find that most people out there use at least one legacy device in their systems.

If there were alternatives for all legacy devices out there like PCI-E cards and USB converters at reasonable prices, then we could talk about legacy getting the axe (from mobos only). Until then legacy should be allowed to live.

most new sound cards and tv tuner cards are mostly pcie. but pcie lan cards are pretty rare still i think. abit made legacy free mobos awhile ago i think (at least regarding ps2 and such)

Nope! Not until I can safely install a Linux distro and have my USB, PCI-E, and Bluetooth work at the GRUB level, otherwise I am still stuck with PS/2 moose and squirrel.

everything except for PCI. PCI is still very relevant and can't be axed for another 10 years at least!

I think they should be trimmed down gradually, and then phased out.
For example, a new motherboard could have 1 IDE and 1 PCI. PS/2 should be cut off, there are adapters for PS/2-USB, and software support should be fixed by developers. Alternatively, they could provide an add-on PCIe card for legacy ports.
The more streamlined the connections on the motherboard, the better it is for layout and performance. People will resist change if given a choice, there is no need to carry so much dead weight.

i say do away with the IDE. no use since most new HDs and optical drives come in sata and are better than the IDE counterparts, such as SATA HDs. PS2 i guess is ok, but i myself have no use for it.

I'd do away with IDE on new high end parts, and on low end ones keep it to 1 port maximum.

As others have said, 1 or 2 PCI slots is still necessary for some users who dropped cash on expensive sound or RAID cards, or TV tuners, etc.

I personally don't want or need PS2 but it's still useful having one PS2 keyboard port on there for legacy keyboards.

You may need one some day. There are still too many BIOS update release notes these days describing something like 'Fixed USB keyboard problem'. I've had to dig-out a PS/2 KB a few times in the past year or so, because there was some BIOS bug with USB devices.

PCI devices are way too common and will be for a few more years. PCI actually received something of a new lease on life for relatively low-bandwidth stuff thanks to PCI Express taking the high-bandwidth stuff. PCI is perfectly fine for 10/100M LAN, WLAN, sound cards short of X-Fi level, SDTV tuners, modems, USB2.0, and the like.

My Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 is PCI. There's still some life there...

But IDE & PS2 could wither away and for all I care! I haven't used either for a few years.

Everything except for PCI. It's still a bit rare for PCI-e sound cards these days, let alone other devices.

PS/2 i dont use
IDE i use <--- i have a few 500gb harddrives that are on IDE and i cant let that go!
PCI i use <--- but this may change at the next sound card or TV tuner I buy... rather than removing PCI i would reduce its emphasis on a board

Keep the P/S2 to ensure that you can use your kb in the BIOS 100% of the time...

Dell has, for the most part, already ditched IDE and PS/2. I think they're in their second generation of systems without IDE. All SATA connections.

PS/2: definitely

IDE: my DVD-RW is IDE, but I wouldn't mind going to SATA

PCI: no chance this is going away soon, but reduce to 1 or 2 slots max. What I hate is they always put the PCI slots at the bottom, and the PCIE slots close to the video card.

I like my PS/2 hard drive. LOL! No, really, I'm not a fan of the poorly designed USB connector, and support for USB devices is too spotty. The Intel X48 M/B is sans PS/2, for instance, and it won't recognize my USB keyboard in the EFI console. PS/2 has never failed me.

IDE I could do without for any new hardware purchase, despite that the SATA connector sucks almost as bad as USB (non-locking, flimsy, difficult to visualize polarization).

PCI: no chance in hell I would give that up. Too valuable for many odd legacy and current devices--especially for electronics enthusiasts. Could give it up on value M/B's. Heck, value M/B's don't even need a slot at all.

Keep one PS/2 port, drop IDE, keep 1 PCI slot. This is where we should be about now.

Make sure the PCI slot isn't blocked by the PCI-E graphics slots.

Honestly, if your using IDE on a P45/X48/X58/nVidia 7xx, you have issues! New SATA burners are cheap (like 25$ cheap), hard drives that are using IDE are sllllow compared to the newer ones (perpendicular drives anyone?? com'on).

Just get rid of that IDE slot, make room for more SATA ports!!! Or at least better placement!

I vote to AX them... the only exception would be a single PS/2 KEYBOARD connection (not mouse)...
Why? because too many utilities, especially bios ones, require you to use a PS/2 keyboard, and don't work with USB keyboards...
On the other hand, heavy handed axing of those shitty ancient obsolete ports would force those annoying throwbacks to finally upgrade and include USB support.

Also, cheap converters are available for almost anything.. even SATA-IDE (6$)
mobos should start by moving all the legacy ports to a pcie expansion card that they provide with the mobo.

Sadly they are killing off my favorite port.
The serial port.
So versatile and easy to use.
PS/2 they can remove I think, its not all that major a loss.

9.99$
the price of a serial port expansion card. there is no reason for some giant ugly serial port on the back of your mobo
