When I was growing up back in Indiana I lived next to a BIG parking lot.
They would plow all the snow down to one end (right next to my house) and we would tunnel and carve a AWESOME snow fort every year!!

That pile of snow had to be 15-20 feet long and 5-6 feet high!

It ruled!!!

Ahh the good old days........... :D

no offense, but your fort sucks :p

no tunnels to hide in? Where you going to store your weapons? You'd have to take snow from the wall to more ammo if you have a snowball fight.

Just wait until we get some snow up here in Minnesota....I'll show you a real fort. I've got 21 years experience under my belt.

Also, LOL at your buddies comments on the bottom of that page.

lol, the comments on your page are classic :)

tell him he forgot that he would also need to install bathroom facilities and ensure that the handicapped could access them. ;)

Good stuff, when I was 12 upstate new york had a 4 foot snow storm... 92 it was... when they plowed the roads for the first time it was about 7 foot tall... so me and my friends tunneled through it... my mom always yelled at me because she was afraid it would collapse on us... oh well, we are alive today :)

I'm sure he did the best he could with what he had to work with.

It looks like he used all the snow there was...

Give the guy a brake!!

Nice Fort!

Yzzim: that was what I was thinking while building. It started out small, but then I realized I needed to build on a larger scale than an 8-year old, plus if I used up all the snow then nobody could retaliate easily.

I used most of the snow available. I didn't dig into the garden because I didn't want too many leaves or dirt in the pile. I didn't scrape the asphalt too hard either, but what's left is just hard-packed snow and ice. I also went around to the side of the house and carried snow from the walkway and part of the driveway into the backyard to add to the pile.

You can see behind the fort, there's a pile of snow for additional ammunition if needed. I only made a few snowballs; then I discovered that I made them so well and with a couple of hours sitting in the cold, they won't shatter when thrown... I lobbed a couple at my roommate in a ballistic approach, but they both hit branches on the way down (otherwise would have been dead on) and they landed in snow; when I went around to where they landed, I discovered them both essentially undamaged. I'm not sure if I'll be throwing those at anyone with any force.

I might have built a really good tunnel system if I actually had that much clean snow. No way would I go digging through snow packed up by plows, with all the street garbage and salt and sand included, either as a youngster or at my current age (that's icky).

I'm going to add onto the fort when possible. I wish for snow anyway, but now I really have a good reason to want it. I also know the best way to add to the existing construct will be to add small amounts and pack it down as I go, rather than dumping huge piles on then packing it. Eventually I hope to get it packed hard enough to shave down the walls so they're straight and look less like simple piled snow.

It should be noted, I'm originally from Florida, I've only lived in New England for 4 years. This is the first snow fort I've ever built, so one can't expect it to be the height of architectural design.

One time i was staying in a cabin up in the mountains with about 12ft of snow on the ground. We dug a tunnel that went down to the ground and out about 20ft... why cant we get that kind of snow down here in boston.

Awesome start

I'd definitely ice down the walls....possibly the front of it too incase anyone tries to take it. If they do, they'll fall flat on their ass and you can pummel them with snow. Think of it as a winterized moat ;)

can't wait to see what it looks like with more snow. Gotta have tunnels and some better place to hide your ammo.
