I built a SiS645 based Asus P4S333 system for a friend, smokin'!!!

NFS4

No Lifer
This is a bitchin' little motherboard. He asked for some recommendations on Intel systems and I recommended him the 1.7GHz Pentium 4 w/Asus P4S333 (SiS645 chipset). I also got him to get a 60GB WD hard drive, Gainward Ti200 Golden Sample, and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, and a 350W PS (all ordered from NewEgg of course😉).

I put the thing together for him today and it has been blazingly quick from the get go. All I had to do was install the SiS AGP driver for Win2k and it was ready to go. Mofo boots like its on speed or something 🙂

SiS chipsets are great as long as you have a good company making the mobo 😉 😉

Lol...I can hear Pabster coming wearing his "I love ECS T-shirt" 😉.

I know you`re baiting him.

🙂

What are you accusing me of?? 😉 😉

Sounds like an awesome system.

Lets see here, ASUS or ECS, ASUS or ECS, ASUS or ECS... 😉

Is that a poll?... I`ll take Asus anytime 😉.

LOL.

He went from a Slot-A Pentium III 500 w/Supermicro mobo, 384MB PC100, and a Herc TNT2 Ultra to this system.

He now wants to overclock the sumbeech 😉 I showed him how to do so in BIOS. I told him to try 105, and then 110, and just see how far it will go before locking up, then back down a bit.

I was also amazed at how TINY the 478 chip is. I mean DAMN it's small. And the heatsink mechanism scared me to death. I was afraid that I was going to crush the chip with the supplied retail Intel HSF and locking mechanism.

i can imagine............

Having just put together my 2.2GHz Northwood w/ P4S333, I can concur. 😀

SiS chipsets are great, no matter what board. My P4S5A was a rock solid board with very comparable performance.

I'm thrilled that the P4S333 is priced significantly lower than other ASUS offerings. I hope the trend continues. 🙂

Tell me you threw in some PC2700? I've got a couple 256MB sticks of XMS2700 (Corsair) running 166 CAS2 and it absolutely flies!

He already bought the DDR memory (PC2100 Crucial) so I had no control over that (he got it when it was cheaper as he was planning on upgrading sooner, but put it off). Either way, it's still a smoking system. I may go over there tomorrow and help him do some more optimizations.

Does anyone ever overclock with the P4S333? :disgust:

Got a Northwood 2.2G and PC2700 DDR and run the system at 100/166 FSB with NO OVERCLOCK? I can't believe it. 😕

He will need to trade the Asus P4S333 in for an Asus P4B266 to get realistic OC.

He's not about to do that. The system is plenty fast for him. O/C is more of a novelty to him b/c he's never done so before.

LOL, it almost seems like overclocking is being used as the definition of stability and reliability around here. Come on. 😀

P4S333 has plenty of overclocking capabilities. I'm using 100/166, because I don't want to have to throw an MCX478 on it with a noisy Delta. It runs incredibly cool (41C is as high as I've seen it) and is absolutely silent. Why would I want to make it sound like a hair dryer? To gain a few points in a synthetic benchmark? No thanks.

I dont think anyone said that, were just curious about its overclocking as most review sites didnt get it too high. Wondering if you guys had better luck. BTW I didnt think the P4 needed anything more than a retail heatsink with some good overclocking, much less at default voltage. So why would you need to slap a noisy fan on there anyway?

but those crucial are proned to run at 166mhz (equal ddr333), do a search under yahoo for "crucial 256mb ddr review"
there is a few sites that got it up t o166mhz fun....

He probably confused the P4 Northwood with the Palomino. 😉
