I Had a dead battery in one of my work trucks, I pulled the hood latch cable and it broke off in my hands. I did manage to pop the hood by grabbing the little wire in the middle of the cable and yanking.

BUT I wasn't ready to replace the battery so I unhooked the latch cable from the bracket about 2 inches from the hood latch (under the hood at the front), I thought it would make it easier to pop the hood later when I had a battery, but it has made it impossible to pop the hood by pulling on the cable inside the truck. No matter how hard I yank on it, it literally broke snapped in half on me.

So how do I pop the hood without a cable?

I talked to a garage they said they would have to take off the grill (about $200) but it sounded like they were unsure. When I googled it, on a similar truck, you had to pop the hood FIRST.. THEN take off the grill, so what *%&#, LOL.
h
There's gotta be a way.

Cannot take the grill out without popping open the hood, it has screws on top so you just end up breaking the grill... From what your saying you have the outer part of the cable loose from the anchor bracket at the hood release...? If so you have to have someone push down on the front of hood while you pull on the cable this is normally to hard to do just by pulling the cable by hand which you have to do with a pair of pliers through the grill or from below and behind the bumper... Once you have the hood open remove the grill for access and just replace the cable with a new one (PITA) but not rocket science...

Not sure buy after reading your issue again if you completely removed the cable from the latch assy out under the hood you will have to go from below to reach the release which will be quite tough...

This makes sense to me, thanks man. I'm going to try it out this afternoon and update. You may have saved me $200 and yeah "From what your saying you have the outer part of the cable loose from the anchor bracket at the hood release...?" This is exactly what I did:(
