I broke my headphone jack, can I use mic jack instead?

This might seem like a weird question, but is it possible to configure a microphone jack to play sound instead of receive it under XP?

Basically what happened was I left my headphones plugged into my laptop, and then tripped over the cord, which caused me to faceplant in front of my roomate, and break my input jack a the same time. I still get some ranges of sound, but a lot of it is distorted and unlistenable, and I have tried using several sets of headphones all with the same problem. The laptop is a Gateway 200S if that helps, and I figured I would give this a shot before I shelled out 30 bucks for a PCMIA soundcard.

Thanks for your help.

A few higher end sound cards will allow you to re-map the plugs, but that's highly unlikely for a built-in laptop sound system.

BTW - if you really want a great sound alternative for your laptop, consider the Creative Audigy 2NX external - about the size of a deck of cards. Connects via USB and has all the ports you want - headphone and mike and line in and out.
