Kinda funny, but I was working with one of my clients today (FASD and autism) and took him his to see his family today (they live out on a hutterite colony).

Apparently they were having some huge 20+ family garage sale and saw these "Acoustic Response M-1440" speakers tucked away in a corner.

I kinda chuckled and the first thing I thought was "Magnetbox" and "Sorny", but I bought them for $50 (total) since I assumed there's no possible way they could be worse than the tiny little $15 radio speakers I've got hooked up now.

I haven't hooked them up yet, but are there any actual specs on the speakers? I can't help but laugh that every single result on google seems to be about the "white van special" and people getting ripped off for hundreds of dollars.

Hmmm. I was going to say they are probably OK because I have AR speakers, then I realized that my AR stands for Acoustic Research.

Now I have no idea. Hope you didn't get ripped.

edit:
oops, posted too late. :hmm:

Well I only paid $50 for the pair at a clients family garage sale, so I don't really feel bad. I'm just surprised at how they sound. The treble hurts the ears, and there's almost no bass at all.

Best speakers i have ever owned (still have them. they are just beat to hell) are $50 (each) set of technics speakers. A buddy of mine spends thousands on components and he tried to find the speakers but they were a short term product. he said the blow his $500 (each) speakers away..well long as you don't blast t hem to loud.

to bad my son has ruined them. he has pushed in the foam cone in and sticks stuff in teh bass hole.

I didn't know what a hutterite was so I Googled it. Turns out they're similar to Mennonites and the Amish. Because when I think of quality modern technology, I think of the Amish! :p

I found a pair of old Pioneer HPM-100's at a garage sale with blown woofers, gave $5 for the pair, sold the tweeters, mids, and crossovers on Ebay for $100! Just gotta know what to look for some older receivers (Kenwood KR9600, some Marantz models) are collectibles, they were massively overbuilt tank-like and had awesome sound..

Seen at a flea market just now.

One glance and I knew these had to be white van scam speakers.

In the late 80s I would literally see the white van speaker scam every single week. From pizza places to supermarkets to arcades, any place that had a parking lot had a white van selling crappy speakers. I used to love fucking with the sellers, walk over, explain to the marks how it worked, watch the van bug out for a different lot.

Nowadays since the dawn of the internet and especially smart phones, I can't recall seeing it live in the wild in at least 10 years. How do you scam somebody into buying Klisp, Boss or Bang & Edmundson now when the potential suckers can google those names and know what's happening within seconds? Does this still really happen? Has anyone seen it recently?
