I bought an old PowerBook G3 that came with OSX10.4, but the install disk was a burnt copy!

I bought an old Mac laptop off someone for $150 a little while ago and just now saw that he included an install disk of OSX10.4 that was burnt.

When someone originally buys a Mac laptop, it does come with an OS and a licence to use that OS.

I obviously don't have a licence to use OSX, so what should I do? Download some linux distro?

Well I wouldn't try to run 10.4 on a G3 anyway. Yellow Dog Linux I know has a PPC distro for it. You can use that. You can also see if you can snag a copy of OS 9.x off ebay or use 10.2 or 10.3, but really Linux would be the better choice due to support.

10.4 is actually running pretty well, the problem is I don't wanna spend another $100 to buy another copy of it 😛

A Pismo G3 (400 or 500 Mhz) with over 500 MB RAM (preferably 1 GB maxed) and a fast hard drive would handle 10.4 decently. Still, 10.3 is probably better on a G3.

My G4 500 with 1GB of RAM has issues with 10.4 so I beg to differ. Though my mom has no complaints. :/

I'd say leave it as-is. If it is already installed, then that was their doing, not yours. I would, however, look into getting a legit copy or find a version of linux that you like for that. 10.4 will be obsolete soon anyway.

The os can be reinstalled from a burned disk if thats the question.

Besides, it is only illegal if he has it installed on another computer.

If he transferred his license to 10.4 to you and isn't running it any more, the fact that the disk is burned is irrelevant (IIRC).
