I bought a rice cooker

$140 Zojirushi rice cooker. It's the 10 cup one.

Here's a similar one except mine is the 10 cup one.

We have the 5.5 cup one at home and it makes FLAWLESS rice. Seriously. It's Godlike. I got tired of my roommate's rice cooker that burns my rice if I leave it on keep warm. I also got tired of my parents' really ancient rice cooker (the old ones where you have to put water in the outer layer too... more like a steamer really).

I feel bad now because I have 1 more semester left in college and I bought a freaking expensive rice cooker. Oh well. My mom complains that our 5.5 cup one overflows a lot because she can't cook too much brown rice, so maybe the 10 cup one will satisfy her.

Anyways, it's time to eat some delicious rice.

Seriously. A $5 pot is a rice cooker for someone with even the most rudimentary cooking skills. I will never understand why these rice cooker things are popular. I think it's a west-coast thing though, I never even knew such things existed until I moved to Seattle. No-one in Ohio seemed to bother with them.

i never understood the rice cooker mentality either

until i married an asian woman and started eating rice at least once (if not twice) per day.

perfect rice, everytime, no matter what variety of the rice

add rice, add water, hit cook
it cooks it, keeps it warm

no rice stuck to the pan, no watching a timer, no occassional stirring
and it frees up a valuable burner on the stove

using a pan works fine if you make rice once a week and you never make more than a cup or two

It's because you don't eat rice with every meal. Are you going to cook rice three or more times a day in a $5 pot? That gets tiring and time consuming. Expensive rice cookers are worth it because it cooks the rice perfectly and keeps it warm for a day or two. Cheap rice cookers will also cook the rice nicely but will ruin the rice if left warm for even a day. As with most things, you get what you pay for.

Ho-old on thar Bubbalouie. Are you saying you leave rice in the cooker which keeps it hot for a day or two? Food safety aside, you do realize that any actual food value has disappeared after cooking for that long?

Rice cookers are not nearly as versatile as counter top steamers which could make your rice and your veggies for you, not to mention reheating your leftovers.

Da Chef has spoken. So, let it be written. So, let it be done.

We normally try to eat it all that day. But eating day old rice is pretty common. We have 4 rice cookers. I bought a cheap $30 something rice cooker at Costco the other day that also steams veggies as it cooks the rice. But I'm taking that back. Rice is uneatable after warming overnight.

Ok, I think if you're eating white man's rice, it doesn't matter. Just like I can't see why people buy $200 toasters, you might not get why Asian people invest in $100+ rice cookers.

I made a bunch of rice to test it out. It beats my roommate's rice cooker ANY DAY. She has an Asian one too and it's electric and all that. IT's a one button deal, but it just CANNOT cook Sushi rice properly. I'm eating Kohuko Rose from Costco, the Japanese rice, and it just undercooks it consistently on her rice cooker.

My old roommate had a Zojirushi cooker also, but it was the cheaper $60 model. It was great until now. I've NEVER had rice this good. Even my mom doesn't cook it right. I think she messes up the water. She goes off the rice bag's directions whereas I know you're supposed to just trust the rice cooker's markings for the 6 different rices it cooks even though it might seem whacked.

You're right. $150 might not be completely worth it, but to any Asian who eats rice, you wouldn't settle for anything less than Zojirushi. I like this cooker because I can set it on timer. I can fill it up and come back for dinner and have rice ready to go. It's perfect. For those really Asian people, you can have rice porridge in the morning without even worrying. Buying this is just like those of you who decide to buy 8800GTXes or SLI systems. It's not the best performance per dollar, but once you get it, you wont regret it. For those of you who say rice can be cooked on the stove, that's a slap in the face to us Asians. That's like saying I boil my hot dogs and cook steak on a TEFLON PAN.

I got a Tiger rice cooker earlier this year and now I can't live without it. I was a skeptic too, but I was trying to improve my diet and I'm all for convenience. I use mine to cook rice as well as oatmeal. I cook white rice, brown rice, jasmine rice, sushi (sticky) rice, and basmati rice, as well as oatmeal and steel-cut oats. Perfect every time as long as you add the correct amounts of rice/oatmeal and water. I usually have rice at least 4 times a week now thanks to my rice cooker.

I really like the convenience of it. I have a rice cooker and a small veggie steamer and use both of them more than half the week. It just makes cooking so convenient...for breakfast I just toss in some steel-cut oats, hop in the shower, and when I get out my food is ready. For dinner I'm usually grilling, so I toss some rice in the rice cooker when I get started and some veggies in the food steamer near the end. Zero effort, easy cleanup, perfect results. What's not to love? :)

I have the same rice cooker and I love it. I've had it for 2 and a half years now and I have no complaints.

I tip to you, make sure you clear out any rice that falls underneath the pot before you cook. If you don't it will burn and stain forever.

yea if you cook rice atleast a couple times a week, its one less thing to worry about. perfect rice every time. cost is nothing considering life span/per use cost of such things. i've never had one break.
