After all the looking at and browsing thru reviews, I finally bought a car yesterday. A Volkswagen Passat GLX in blue anthracite, 5sp manual.

Hooray!

The car is really nice, my relatives got a new Jetta. But don't you think the VW's are generally overpriced? I'd take a 2001 Maxima over a Passat. It's cheaper, roomier, and more powerful. But those are my 2 cents.

Probably Xenon cause if you compare a maxima to a passat the passat smells of higher quality. I agree in that I'd personally take the extra room and power myself, but the build quality and feel of new VW's is better than a low-end maxima. I test drove a new golf a few months ago and was insanely impressed.

Xenon - I guess they are priced that way since they are German. Atleast thats what I think. Besides, I got a good deal with this one.

Thanks, MrCide. I hope there wasn't any sarcasm there. ;)

Skoorb - I hope my engine reply answered your question.

great car!!! i used to have a '90 Passat. keep in mind that vw overbuilds their engines, so don't worry about pushing it too hard. :)

Nice choice :) I really like the Anthracite blue as well.

Personally I would have gone w/ the 170 HP 1.8t turbo...but that's just me ;)

vi_edit - I test drove a 4 cylinder turbo. That little thing had some solid zip to it. I was impressed.

I like the turbo, not because it posts better times, but because it "feels" quicker and is more fun to drive. It also has a lot of room to be modded if you so desire.

The turbo gets better gas milage as well :)

problem is the vr6 will last twice as long as the motor/turbo 1.8 will. I've got an old 90 with the G60 motor. It's tough but you need to replace the rod bearings/bolts about every 60K miles, and the charger goes around the same amount of time if you ride it hard. Never the less, fun stuff. I still have mixed feelings on the VR6 vs 1.8T. We've got both in my house, gf has a 2001 jetta gls vr6 and i have the old corrado g60. Boost is expensive, and when driven hard, even more expensive!

Two differences here - this isn't the VR6, and the turbo they put in now is much better than the G60 :)
