I bought a motorcycle!

I've been looking for a bike for a while now, I really hadn't planned on buying one until next spring at the earliest.

This past weekend, I was home visiting my folks and I happened to check Craigslist and found a 1982 Honda CM450 Custom for sale about 30 minutes from where they live. The price looked good, so I checked it out.

I've never ridden a bike before, so I took my uncle along and he test-rode it for me. I decided to buy it, so my uncle rode it home for me yesterday.

It's not in excellent shape, but it's really not bad. Unless the pipes have been replaced, I don't think it's ever been laid down. It'll be a great first bike.

The first order of business is an oil change and a new rear tire. I may restich the seat with black thread, or I might try and find a good deal on a new one. My uncle suggested modifying the seat so I could sit farther back, so I may try that. I'm going to try and find a windshield for it as well.

I've got a helmet and gloves, but I need boots, pants, and a jacket still. I left it at my parents' place since they've got lots of storage room.

It's killing me that I can't be around it until this weekend 😀. I'm very happy with it.

sweet! Good you bought it in the fall, prices go up in the spring 🙂 sorta like convertibles. looks nice! Glad you're being serious about gear - dress for the crash, not for the ride, because more likely than not it'll be a cager that causes you to crash.

definetly take the MSF course if you havn't already, it is THE best $150 i put into my motorcycle 🙂

careful - its quite addictive!!

I sent in my app for the MSF course ($25 in Ohio), but that was two weeks ago and I have not heard from them yet, so I suspect the check is lost in the mail. I'm going to call them today at lunch and see what's up. Hopefully classes aren't full this fall.

I think I got a good enough deal, $650 for the bike and a new tailbag.

If the front tire is just ok and not in excellent condition you might replace that as well.

The front tire looks really good - it's got lots of tread and still has the little whiskers on it. The rear tire is quite bad, almost smooth in the very center strip. It's got lots of cornering tread left on it, but the roads are straight enough here that I definatly need a new one.

That's a great bike. I have an '82 CB450SC that has been dead reliable. The early 1980's 450cc Hondas are quite possibly the best beginner bikes ever.

Awesome. I'm looking for a 250 Enduro w/ a monoshock (gonna dirtbike most of the time on it, but eventually on road). Nice bike and a nice price.
