I bought a Garmin 760 GPS at Amazon for $199 ..... soon after I bought it I learned it is no longer being made. Is there a better GPS out there for around $200? I can still cancel my order at Amazon. Id appreciate some help here.

Nothing wrong with the 760 just because it's discontinued. You're still going to have the full warranty.

Garmin will still be releasing firmware updates for it and new map updates will still work on it.

The Nuvi 760 has been one of their best / most popular models to date. For $199, you got a good deal if it's new and not used / refurbished.

It has the active mount unlike Nuvis in the 2xx, 11xx, 12xx, 13xx, and 14xx line.

Everyone is correct, 760 is still a good GPS.

However, 3rd Gen Nuvi UI in 2x5 series has its advantages.
It provide much clear instruction at glance.
Smoother animation.
Detail distance, ETA info before "navigate".
New Eco drive feature.
Nearby emergency POI.
Buildin MSN direct. ( w/ BGD55) and more.

On top of replacing aging Sirf III of 760 , all new 3rd-gen Nuvi now has faster processor with STM chipset. It does provide faster and more accurate signal.
( Nuvi 2nd gen's SirfIII doesn't seems to work too well with vertical antenna design )

Now... because of faster processor, xx5 series has shorter battery life per charge compare to 2nd-gen 2x0/ 7x0 line. ( real life test has drop from 4+ hours, down to barely 3 hours on non-W version )

Again, 2x5(T) w/ traffic and MSN direct seems to be a good idea. HOWEVER, most of traffic info only focus on major highway. I have yet to find any secondary traffic info ever show up during my test. ( consider, I live only 10 min away from MS Redmond campus )
(t) must connected at all time to function. If you don't like to mess with charger and cable, then, you might find it quite annoying.

Anyhow, if you are NOT a road worrier that only use GPS occasionally and you are able to return your 760 back to Amazon. I would suggest 255W. ( that is if you must have wide screen ) Otherwise, with all the "entry-level" GPS I have tested, I actually bought and keep Nuvi 260. ( it is only Nuvi with MTK chipset )

$200? I'd get the Nuvi 265WT. Amazing value. One of the top ones at gpsreview.net

Thank you guys, I was able to cancel my 760 order this morning, I just barely made it on time

So if I got it right the 255W is the same was the 265WT only without blutooth, no ?

BTW I am just buying this mostly to be used as a toy, and perhaps an occasional actual need. Ive never actually had a GPS before.
The 255W is about $175, the 265WT is about $220. So fun to use is #1 but since I am only gonna 'need' it once in awhile I am gonna expect it
to work well.

I am not gonna order again until I hear back from you guys on this.

thanks

One more thing, that 260 is the cheapest out of all of em....... http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-2...&qid=1245770333&sr=1-1

(T) means traffic.
265WT has lifetime traffic support also.

So...does bluetooth + lifetime traffic TMC worth extra $45? hmm.... I don't know, it really all depends on how you want to use it.

On that link, I clicked
1.Widescreen
2. speaks street names
then priced em low to high and the 255W is the cheapest so I am gonna order a 255W.

Since ive never owned a GPS I don't really know what features would be nice to have.

I think this will be a good first one. I live in WA right on the Canadian border.....small town so traffic aint an issue. Again, I am buying this mostly to be used as a toy. :)

thanks guys

Here is an article comparing the nuvi 265WT and nuvi 760...http://gpsmagazine.com/2009/03..._265wt_vs_nuvi_760.php

Conclusion...

In many respects the nuvi 265WT and nuvi 760 are quite similar: both have a 4.3-inch widescreen display. Both have Bluetooth for hands-free calling, text-to-speech (speaks actual street names), and map coverage of North America (USA & Canada). Since the nuvi 760 was first introduced, Garmin has rolled out some nice enhancements that have been included in the newer, albeit "lower end" nuvi 265WT, such as an updated map screen, and free lifetime traffic service.

Compared to the nuvi 760, the 265WT offers a better map screen, free lifetime traffic, GPS HotFix technology for faster signal acquisition times (it gets GPS signals faster than the 760), and a few usability enhancements. Compared to the nuvi 265WT, the 760 offers nicer hardware (including a powered windshield mount), multi-stop routing with route optimization, an FM transmitter, audio out jack, and external antenna connector.

Unless you have a specific need for one of the nuvi 760's features, the 265WT offers a better map screen, and is the unit I prefer between these two models.

and in the 265WT review I found this.......
The nuvi 265WT is a full featured GPS that offers a well designed map screen, slim form factor, free traffic for the life of the device, and a large POI database. Like other Garmin nuvis, the 265WT feels solidly built, reliable, and simple to use. Those who don't plan on using Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling should take a look at the nuvi 255T, which is otherwise identical but costs around $70 less.

Right, but you can try to find a good deal on the 265WT. It was 30% off on Cyber Monday, and there was a more recent sale. For $250, it's not worth it, but if you find a deal like

"Garmin Nuvi Bluetooth GPS Units: 265WT 4.3" or 275T 3.5" $130 (or $125 w/ DPA) (Multi-page thread 1 2 3 4 5 ... Last Page)" oh yeah... that would've rocked.

A big difference is the mounting mechanism. The Nuvi 760 has an active mount. The optional microphone and the power plug / FM TMC adapter / MSN Direct adapter plug into the mount and then you simply pop the Nuvi into the mount. The Nuvi 2xx, 4xx, 12xx, 13xx and 14xx series all have plastic clip mounts that snap onto the Nuvi. You have to manuall plug all cables into these Nuvis everytime you take them out of the car / put them back into the car. With the Nuvi 7xx and higher series, you get the active mount and multi-point routes.
