I blew up my power supply! Transformer question...

First off, I'm an idiot.

I just bought a new APC rackmount UPS unit from firesale.com (OEM repackaged) for next to nothing.

I didn't pay any attention to the I/O 230v on the back of the unit. All the sockets were universal power connectors, so I plugged it into the wall, then plugged my computer into the back.

I switched it on, and it started beeping, then POP, the power supply in the computer died, although I didn't know it just yet. So since I am an idiot, I tried again. This time it sputtered and started to smoke, the UPC was beeping and the lights in the house started dimming. Pretty cool stuff. Since I try to think every-so-often, I choose that moment to quickly pull the power plugs. Everything returned to normal, except the smell.

I replaced the PSU, and checked to make sure all the components were still working, which they are, and began the forum search to see if anyone else has ever done this.

My question is:
Can I use some sort of a step up transformer into the APC unit, and switch the new power supply to 230v in the computer and actually make use of the APC? Or would stepping down from the 230v of the APC into the computer work better? Though I don't think the unit would like only getting 115v.

So, I'm an idiot. Please be kind. Thanks.

good question. radio shack sells foreign converters that will step down to 120 (USA). trouble is , they're made for hair dryers and such. a computer is a HUGE thing. you might want to look for a big beefy one though. you're probably gonna have more luck finding a step-down that you will finding a big step-up transformer
