Cliff Notes:

Lost my brand new cell phone on the metro this morning (~$500)

Been calling it all morning

Someone picked up and said they found the phone and I can get it anytime.

Didn't even ask for a reward (even though I'm going to give him some money)

dabuddha can breathe again :D

How much do you think would be good for a reward? I was thinking $50.00

UPDATE: Just went and picked up my phone. The guy was a really nice guy. Didn't even ask me for any money or a reward. I told him I'm going to mail him something tonight since I didn't have any cash on me. I was thinking a thank you card and a $30 check.

$50 for picking up a cell phone and being a good samaritan?
A handshake and lunch.

He saved me another $400 and I have peace of mind now so I figure it's worth it. Plus it's so hard to find good people these days.

True, though I tend to believe people are generally good.
Why don't you have insurance on such an expensive phone?

40-50 should be fine, I would have given you the phone back as well, and not accepted any reward. FWIW ;)

Get them a gift of some sort, cash is a little cold for such a nice gesture.

Edit: Bear in mind I'm a Canadian, with an inborn suspicion of the filthy lucre.

Thinking of a gift for someone you don't know is pretty difficult. And they might not even be able to use it or want it.

Found a phone in Victoria, BC this summer.
We were riding in one of those pedicabs, and I spotted it in a crosswalk. I got out and grabbed it, and called the last number dialed. His roomie answered.

It was another cabbie's phone, from the same company!!! Our cabbie knew him, and we had a good laugh.
It must have slipped off the clip as he loaded some people.

yea, a gift for a stranger is a bit odd. i would offer lunch or soemthing like that. if he really is a good samaritan, i dont think he would accept the reward anyway. i wouldnt, if it was me, but i would be more inclined to bum off a free lunch. :)

Go with the 50. If it were a $200 then 20 is alright but a $500 phone...50 is good.

If he doesn't want to accept the reward, ask what his favorite charity is and let him know you'll donate it.

And congrats on getting your phone back.

But if he doesn't take your money, take him out to lunch or something

I agree, $50 is good. Remember, it's polite to refuse cash gifts once, so if he says, "No, no; it's OK." Give it to him anyway.
