I am wanting to get an Xbox 360 for online play only. Is it worth it?

I am wanting to get a 360 for online play only. I have a modded xbox for media so I am just needing this for Online play until the modding scene gets better. So I was wondering what the cheapest way to get online would be? Should I just buy a brand new Premium from a store and a game? Or would it be cheaper to buy a used one off ebay? How often do 360's break? Would it be better to buy it from the store with a warranty?

You get a 1-year warranty now, so that's worth paying extra for over eBay.

Amazon and GameStop have had bundles with 1 game for $400. Dell has had deals for it for $350 (none right now).

Add another $80-90 if you want wireless (networking), since MS doesn't include it like the PS3 does.

Check for deals at Overstock.com.

No guarantee that the 360 you get will be good and still under warranty.

How often do 360's break?
Some people have had no problems. Other people have gone through 4 or more. The important thing is to keep it and the power brick well ventilated.

The 360 comes with a one-year warranty now. If you think spending $30-$60 on an extended warranty, it is up to you. Online stores like Overstock offer warranties too.

Is Xbox live all that great? I have never used it so I don't know. I have only played online on PS2 and PC so how does it compare

Yes. Easy to contact your friends in and out of games. Easy to get friends together for games, etc. Performance is great overall but it is ultimately up to how well a game is coded for online play. Example: COD2 had performance issues out of the box but GoW performs great (lobby issues aside).

What games do you want to play for it? Are they available on the PC and can your PC play them? If so then don't bother.

Does Microsoft ever offer any deals on Xbox live gold? In games like COD3, will Gold allow me to view a server list or something?

I think you can get wireless APs for pretty cheap that plug into the ethernet port. Unfortunately though the only USB WiFi adapter that will work is the official M$ one.

use a wireless router/bridge, or an etherent wireless adapter, or logitech playlink. All usually cost under $25

Stores will offer deals on Gold membership. I think Circuit City is offering 12 months of Live for $40 right now. Pricematch at Best Buy and you can get an additional 1600 MS points for free.

Gold allows you to play online with others. Silver is free and allows everything (demo downloads, Live Arcade downloads, movie downloads, friend lists, chats, text messages, etc) except the ability to play online with other.

Well I think one of my non-really close friends plays online but thats about it. My PC can't run many games at all Diablo II is about it. And I am not really sure what games I would want. I like most shooters I think GoW is a shooter but don't have a clue. I also like mini-game/puzzle games

Shooters you'll like:
GoW
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Halo 2 (backwards compatible Xbox game)

Plenty of puzzle games on Xbox Live Arcade - Live Arcade Games
