I am upgrading to a core i7 920 from a Q9650.

I am upgrading to a core i7 920 from a Q9650. Can I keep my current Windows Vista installation? I am not nuts. The upgrade will actually be a minimal cost to me. These are the parts: Ram, Motherboard, and the cpu is a D0 stepping i7 920. I also purchased this kit so I can reuse my OCZ Vendetta 2 cooler.

I got a great deal on the motherboard and cpu on eBay with a 14% live.com cashback incentive. The motherboard was $198 and the cpu was $258! I will sell my current cpu, motherboard, and ram which are all still bringing decent money on eBay.

I know the performance increase will be minimal, but I am more interested in having a new upgrade path vs being at a dead end.

Isn't the Q9650 ahead of the 920 in stock benchmarks? 🙂 Sorry, I HAD to say it... it was a compulsion, couldn't resist.

You want to just swap over your hard drive to the new MB? I'm guessing no with such a drastic change. Or if it worked, the system would be dogged down by the change-over negating your upgrade and then some.

Is this an OEM version of Vista?

You could try a "repair install" - that's about as close as you can get to a fresh install I think.

You are probably better off selling the HD with the MB 🙂

I needed those sarcastic comments! 😀 It is the retail version of Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I thought I would have to re-install Windows. I think I ask this same question before every upgrade. I guess I am hoping the answer will be different on one of these occasions. Thanks.

Why don't you do some benchmarks before you sell off your Q9650 just for kicks to compare with your i7 setup and yes, windows hates you and wants you to reinstall so back everything up
