Find an IRC program..I typically run mIRC (mirc.com). Doubleclick -> install. It's not that hard, really..lol

Isn't there usually a channel (#irc) where the n00blArs can congregate safely?

Oh yeah, if you see me online - run. :D

Uber-new to IRC eh? Just don't accept any files and don't listen to anyone on any of the big seedy networks.. EFNet/UnderNet/DalNet/etc.. the script kiddies still exist. :) IRC is fantastic, I've used it for years upon years (mIRC since version.. 2 or 3.something.. Great software in my opinion, and it's gotten a lot better as far as exploits go.. The scripting is great too, quick and easy to learn and you can do a lotta cool stuff.)

Seems like a good opportunity to tout AnandTech's unofficial Off Topic live chatroom, #neochat on the Undernet network.

If you're not into getting an IRC client, this very cool Java applet is a one-click link to the channel. :)

Aside from the fact that they're both populated by users who are able to chat with one another .. everything :)

Years ago.. say when I was 11 or 12 I tried to get all my friends from school to use IRC over AOL chatrooms but I guess IRC was just too difficult of a concept for them to grasp. If you are a channel(chatroom) owner you have MUCH more control over the room(provided you can register is with one of the network services, ChanServ is what I'm most familiar with, tho even that varies a lot from server to server). You can set just about any option for your nick(username) using NickServ(if the server uses it) and your channel(ChanServ if the server uses it).. That's just the begining, IRC allows quick file transfers and MANY other scripting possibilities. All in all, it's just vastly more powerful than an AOL chatroom.

Connect to a server(dalnet, etc.), connect to a channel, use channel commands to connect to fservers. Use fserver commands(get, list, cd).

Download whatever illegal content you got mIRC to find.

better tell us what you want out of irc. chat? file sharing?

reason i ask is because a lot of newbies equate irc with file sharing, a big mistake.
