I am thinking of using webcam as surveillance camera

The neighborhood I live is not "quiet". I live in 2nd floor with a balcony. There are always people on the street. However, some kids climbed to my balcony, then went to the stairwell side, and went in thru the stairwell window. They were the friends of my 3rd floor neighbor, I assume, because they always spoke aloud on 3rd floor then.
The kids (teenagers) actually didn't stop at my balcony, it's just a step on their way to the destination.

I think maybe I should setup my webcam facing the balcony and stream the live video, or send pictures to my ftp site. Who knows, if the kids break in my apt, at least I can show the video and pictures to the police.

Am I too paranoid?
