well me seagate 80gb drive is pratically full, so i have been thinking about picking up a new HD.
I am figuring that i might as well buy a new HD that is At least twice as big.
So between the 160 to 200gb HDs there seem to be only a few drives to select from. IBM, Maxtor, and Westerndigital.
First off i wouldnt buy another IBM, so that leaves me with Maxtor and WD.
At first i was in favor of the Maxtor, because in the past i have had to RMA around 5 WD drives in the last 8 years. All the WD drives that had failed on me where older models tho, i havent bought one in the last 3 to 4 years.

I have notice that most if not all of the HD companies have reduced thier warenties from 3 to 1 years. ouch.
But the WD2000JB HD still offers a 3 year warrenty. So i am thinking to myself that maybe i was just very unlucky to have my WDs die on me before. I think that i would rather buy a WD with a 3 year warrenty then Maxtor with only a 1 year warrenty.

So, bassically has anyone have any comments on the Westerndigital WD2000JB drive.

thanks

I use one for the main drive on my primary rig. Fast, pretty quiet...look for a rebate, I just got my $100 from WD earlier this week. Nice, (did I say fast?) drive. I'd get another.

cool, as of now i am searching around to see if that 100 rebate is still around. the only computer stores around me locally are bestbuy and circuitcity. im not sure if they are still offering that 100 rebate..? im going to have to check tonight when i get out of work. unless anyone knows here..
i was looking online for this drive but it seems like all the online vendors only sell the OEM version for around 240ish.
in the retail stores is around 300, but it comes with the PCI 48 bit adressing card that i need anyways.

hopfully i can pick one up with the 100 buck rebate. 200 bucks for a 200gb drive along with the included PCI card, it seems like i cant go wrong.

thanks rbV5!

i will probely order one from Frys, if my local bestbuy is no longer offering the rebate.

thanks

I'll probably never buy WD again for home use. My personal experiance is that the drives can start whining after a while, very annoying and headache inducing. As is the experiance with many people, at least with the JB line, but that is not to say it will happen to you. Seagate > WD imo. get a barracuda IV or V.

I have two fast gaming computers (two teenagers) and each has a WD 7200 rpm 80gig
harddrive. They have proven to be excellent. comparison tests show them to be just
a hare slower then the fastest IBMs and reliabillity so far is light years ahead. I have
in the last three years RMAd at least 6 IBMs (im slow to learn) and I have two new
replacement IBMs on the shelf that will never be allowed close to a PC of mine.
Their are I believe 2 different versions of the WD 7200s, you want the one with the
large cache. New Egg has had some good prices lately.

Storage Review does some great reviews of hard drives. From their leaderboard, the WD is the highest performer, but it is also the highest noise level (i think). I personally don't care about noise, as I have a pretty old computer (Maxtor 40gb back in the day) and anything I buy new should be quieter. Check the reviews for yourself.

I like WD, my file server has 4 WD drives, two old-school 13GB drives and 2 "new-school" 200GB SEs. I am very happy with all of them. For the file server I needed capacity more than speed, so I can't say much about the speed (except that file transfers are fast!). I may pick up another one or two at Frys (thanks for that link, btw)... Do I really need 800GB of storage? 😉

well i just order the WD2000JB from Frys, i figured that the price was pretty damn good ;-)

neways i was wondering if it would be bad to set up this drive as one big partition?
i am just going to use it for media storage. so i probley will never have to defrag it.

thanks

Did your order ship from Fry's? I just placed an order for this drive today and the order status page says "Back Ordered". The site still lists the drive as shipping "Same Day"......yeah right. I feel like I'm about to get screwed by Fry's Outpost or I'll have to cancel my order.

I hate when sites have such HUGE discrepancies in availability. This was my first order from Outpost.....might be my last.
