My roommate never gives me my mail. I find piles of my mail dropped around the apartment, when I go looking for it. On the rare occasion, he drops that day's mail in front of my door. Because of that, I don't get things. Like cell phone bills. Or car insurance (liability only) bills.
Yeah.
Anyway, this morning on the way to work, I was coming off of the freeway, looking to merge into another lane. The off-ramp is after the overpass and clover-leafs back around to the overpass. Just after I got on to the overpass, the light turns red, so cars are stopping on the overpass. Great. So am I. I give my self plenty of distance between me and the car in front of me. The lady to the right is inching her way over with her blinker, hoping I'll slow down so she can change lanes to be in front of me. I momentarily look left and see one early 90's gray honda civic in the lane to my left, just in front of my position, if I were to be in that lane. I return my view in front of me to see that I have about a car's length of distance between me and the white Malibu in front of me. I'm going about 20 mph. I look left again to see if there is a car next to me and if there is a car just behind me to see if I can change lanes, left. There is. Okay, so that means I stay in this lane. I return my view to in front of me and the civic fvcking squeezed in between me and the malibu and there is now only a few inches between me and the idiot civic in front of me AND STOPPED with it's nose RIGHT against the Malibu's rear bumper.
Sh|t.
Rapidly applying the breaks, I tried to stop. Typically this doesn't lock up the wheels unless I'm going, say, 45 and absolutely stomp on the brakes. Well, my wheels locked up. WHAM. I rear-ended the guys in the car, and they roll forward a little bit. The young lady to my right who is now parallel with me instead of .5 car lengths ahead is staring at the car in front of me in shock, like she'd never seen an accident before. The guys in the car ahead of me are looking around, but not getting out and going nuts or anything like that. When the light turned green, the white Malibu in front of them then pulled off to the side of the road with their blinker on and stoped. I don't know if that's because they got hit by the civic or because they were watching and wanted to give their name as a witness to the accident to the two parties involved.
What happens? The civic FVCKING DRIVES OFF. Great. Now I have to follow them all over hell and back waiting for them to stop somewhere so we can exchange insurance information. We passed the Malibu and I thought about stopping to see if the Malibu got hit but in that less-than-a-second that I had to think, I thought that the car that I actually hit would be the priority, so I followed the civic. The civic FINALLY turns off into a gas station. But, when they did this, it was a last-minute decision and almost hit the curb by not turning in time. The driver and passenger park their car and get out to look at the bumper. I stopped, got my insurance information, and asked them if they were okay. Cars can be replaced, people can't. When I asked if they were okay, I asked several times, getting an "oh yeah yeah" from them. They're both hispanic. They're both young. Crap. I asked if they had insurance, and the driver was like "um.... yeah. yeah." I then asked if they spoke English and both of them said no ( big surprise
)
:frown:
I remember a fair amount of Spanish from my highschool days, so I asked in Spanish if they had pen and paper to write down my insurance but they didn't. Good thing they stopped at a gas station. I got my info copied onto a piece of paper and gave it to them with my name, phone number, insurance agency, and policy number and asked again if they were okay and they said yes. We checked their bumper and there were a few scratches on the top of their bumper from the bottom of my bumper (my truck was just tall enough for their bumper to slide right under it and hit the frame of my truck) and I pointed them out. But the driver kept saying that it was okay and waving his hand around like I'm supposed to just forget the whole thing.
Yeah right.
I knew that I'd be late to work now, so I rushed to work and signed in two minutes late. Damn.
I talked to my insurance agent who is local. See, I'm good friends with the owners and everyone who works for a local towing company and I've gone on tows to help out when they're understaffed or just for fun. I've seen WAY too many tows where the cars get towed and licenses (if they even have one) stripped for driving without insurance. WAY too many. The insurance agent said that they were probably brushing me off because they didn't have insurance and that I shouldn't worry about it unless they call to make a claim -in which case the insurance agent would call me and get everything going. She said that she sees this kind of thing all the time and that the guy probably didn't even have a license.
Later in the day on my afternoon break, I got a phone call on my cell phone from an obvious hispanic that spoke English pretty damn well. He asked me if I remember a little gray civic from earlier in the day, and I knew it had to be the owner of the car. One thing that I forgot to put on the insurance information that I gave the two boys was the phone number to the local insurance agent, which they could have looked up in the fvcking yellow pages or called directory assistance. I told him to call directory assistance for the number because I didn't have it on hand, he agreed, and we hung up. I immediately called the insurance agent (had the number written in my pocket from calling my mom from work for the number earlier) and told them that they might get a call from someone trying to file a claim on the accident, which is fine. But the guy that would be calling was NOT the driver. The voice was older, more mature, and he spoke English quite well, which was very cool. The agent said that it would make a difference in the accident report, but not make a difference in how they would reimburse them for the damage. I just wanted to make sure that they knew just in case the guy who called claimed to be the driver at the time of the accident.
I got off work two hours later and called the insurance company a few minutes before they closed to see if the gentleman had filed a claim, which he hadn't. I told the agent that I was coming that evening to pay the bill and that I knew my insurance was late. What does she tell me JUST THEN instead of earlier in the day with the three calls that I made during my morning break and lunch? My insurance lapsed this morning at 12:01am because of non payment. :Q :| Now, I know that it is my responsibility to pay my bills, and for the most part I do a good job. I knew my insurance was going to be late because I was finishing off paying off a stupid mistake that I made with my credit last year. I thought I would just get a late penalty and that would be it, which is fine with me. I asked her why I never received a "threat letter" and she said that it was sent out earlier this month! WTF... That means my roommate AGAIN didn't give me my mail. He's home before me (now that he actually HAS job, as of a week or so ago), if he even leaves the appartment. For two months he sat with no job wondering how he was going to pay the rent when his savings ran out.

FVCKING GODDAMNIT!!!!
It's my responsibility to pay my bills, including car insurance. I would have asked my mom for help and paid her back today if I had realized that I was THAT late. Jesus.
...I'm so fvcking stupid....
I'm so fvcked
Yeah.
