After a short stint in the kitchen, I've made a pot of killer chili. Completely from scratch/natural ingredients. Compares favourably to the other meals of mac-n-cheese, canned Chef Boyardee, and PBJs, I'd say. :D

Anyone else sick of the prepackaged, precooked, prechewed predigested trends in "food" these days? Seems like everyone I meet doesn't know their way around the kitchen, especially men.

No kidding. Over Christmas break when food service closed in our cafeteria, all the kitchens (one kitchen to a floor) smelled like pizza. And you should've seen the piles of pizza boxes in the trash room. I cooked real food too.

I'm the only one in my apartment with any culinary ability. While I'll admit that I'm no chef or anything, I make things like tacos, spaghetti, and hamburgers (George Foreman grill is the greatest invention ever :) ) all the time. I've made a few other things, too. Breaded chicken breast, meatloaf, and a few other "nicer" dinners. Most of the time, just enough for myself, too. My roommates don't seem to care that I'm eating good food and they're eating ramen and frozen pizzas

Someone gave me an Iron Chef apron.... I guess I'll use it when I move to a proper place to cook.

i'm sick of preprocessed food myself... that's why i cook all the time now... my roomates on the other hand... they're always eating out, and spending money, complaining about the food, getting fat, and yet still not taking things into their own hands.... kinda sad, isn't it...

unless you made 9 different dishes, and every single one of them contains octopus (even dessert), you're not an Iron Chef.

well i hope so anyway; i came thiiiis close to burning the roux.

Just remember: the main ingredient in chili is meat. beans are strictly optional.

I like beans in chili.

I cook very little because I suck at it, and do not have time to learn. I buy certain brands of stuff that is pre made ( chili, soup etc) and mess with it by adding stuff, but that is about all.

I am going to try twice baked potatoes today though. I have a thread bookmarked by notfred (I think) where he had a simple recipe. I would love others. Anyone have a favorite 2x baked potato recip?

If you want to eat something more substiantial/nutritious than a bowl of seasoned meat, then beans aren't optional. :)

Yup, cooking is good and cheap. I spend $15-$20 a week on food. Roommates complain how they never have money since eating costs so much, like $300 a month. Eating out at $10 a day or more.
