Let 'em try. If they come up with a search engine that's somehow better than Google then, heck, more power to them!

But, I'm sticking with Google for quite a while.

Why is that BS? It's business. Their not trying to push Google out of business their trying to develop a search engine to work just as well as Googles. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Your hatred seems kind of unfounded...they are like Nazis because they are going into different new/different businesses?

Google will hand Microsoft their ass. There is no chance they can take on Google. None.

I don't hate Microsoft (I use XP and WM2003) but it is true that they are everywhere, it's like you can't escape from them. It's not a good or bad thing, just a observation of the computer/technology industry as a whole.

"leet" give me a break. just because you can't think by yourself doesn't mean others can't.

maybe the nazi comment was out of line, but if ms takes it over, then noboby will try to beat them, so the search engines will only be as good as ms, no competition because people / small companies don't have the billions to try to make a better wheel and then get sued by ms. although the ms wheel will work, it could always be better.

Yahoo and Altavista were the Microsofts of the search engine world before Google came out of nowhere and blew them away. It has happened, can happen, will happen again. Competition is a beautiful thing.

I, personally, don't think Google has anything to worry about as long as they keep delivering. MS search engines suck, imo. They even suck on their own site.

i agree that competition is a beautiful thing, but if ms does a decent job, even as good as google but not better, that is all we can expect. it will become part of your os.

MS search engines DO suck. In fact the one on msdn is probably the worst I've ever used. Even worse than the old crap like lycos we had to use before google. I am sure they can make it better but currently it's SH*T. In most other areas MS has the best product though. Their operating system continues to obliterate the competition in most areas.

MS will have to make something better than Google to become the superpower of search engines.

If they make something better than Google, then we, the consumer, will have a better service.

If they fail to beat Google, then we, the consumer will still have Google.

MS can only "take over" if they manage to surpass Google, and if they do, it will be a good thing, and may make Google a better service (they will improve themselves).
Google level of decency is the lowest we can ever have in terms of search engines.

i agree, but now they are going after this. they have the money to do whatever they want. it will become more of their monopoly. how many people do you know that think ms are the only people that make oss(sp?)?

i have to agree their console gaming system didn't do as good as i thought it would, which makes me feel pretty good.

The problem is, they've got so much money, they don't know in what they should invest. That's a phenomen in the industry.

It's done better than a LOT of people thought. I thought that the XBox is turning into a success for MS?

I should quote that and read it back to you when they do. Searching/indexing has never been a focus for MS, look at Index Server. It was just a "value-add" like many of their products; they offer a solution but there are better alternatives. If they DO make this their focus, they will almost certainly top Google. In the end it comes down to resources, of which MS has ostensibly infinite.

My tupence.

I agree. Unless google has sold their sold to Lucifer they've done nothing that Microsoft cannot do. Unfortunately for google MS has a great many more dollars and manhours to throw at whatever they like. They can make a better product. And even if their product isn't better, but merely as good or close to as good, they can muscle it into whatever they like.

I don't think MS has tried very hard with searching either. I think I could make a better search engine than what MSDN has. Sure, it would be slow as hell and inefficient, but at least it would work!
