I have never heard of a teller fee for withdrawing money out of your account. Are you talking about a cashier's check? $8 is typical for them to type up a cashiers check. But just to go to the bank and withdraw the cash is free in every bank I've ever heard of.

What bank is this? And why must it be $3000 in cash?

I've paid 1 fee in the ~24 years I've had a bank account. It was for attempting to cash a check from a customer who closed the account. I was out $5 and decided not to bother fighting for it.

Wachovia Bank

They charge a fee each time you go to a teller all atm transactions are free.

Maybe the teller thought you wanted the extra money in the form of an official check...? If not, I know alot of banks that charge a fee if you go over their "monthly bank transactions" they allow you to have with fee.

Banks generate a large amount of money from fee income. Infact, they really push it andif your not careful, they can easily take advantage of you.

I worked at a bank for 1.5 years.

hmm...odd bank, are you getting interest on your checking cause there shouldn't be a charge to take out money.

Close your bank account and take your business to a better financial institution.

Where there are NO FEES to talk to a teller.
No fees for ATM, phone and internet banking.
No fees for usual money order/cashiers checks/notary.
Lower interest rates on credit cards, car loans and home mortgages.
HIGHER interest rates for savings accounts.

Open an account with your local CREDIT UNION !!!

This is why you should punish them by closing your account and finding a good credit union.*

In business: reward good behavior; punish bad.

* and hopefully one day they will ask why you closed your account.

Not all CUs are free. The Purdue Employee's Federal Credit Union has free electronic accounts for students but you get charged as soon as you wander over to a teller. Conversely, I know several banks that don't have any fees.

I have Wachovia and I had that ATM, internet only "express account"

CHANGE THAT ACCOUNT TO FREE CHECKING!

Wachovia is giving out free checking accounts. No fees at all.
It's called the "free checking account"

You can change to it anytime. Just ask someone behind a desk, don't know if a teller can.

I have a few accounts with Wachovia and I won't defend them for everything they do, but that $8 fee wasn't only because it was a teller transaction. You said it yourself, you've got a $1500/day withdrawal limit on your card and you're pulling out $3000. Maybe it was some limit override fee? I know the teller visit itself is $2 if I do it more than twice a month (which is rare) so there's more to that $8.

But hey, if you can get by with fewer banking locations then do what the others said: credit union.

edit: For the record: Wachovia Checking Account Fee Schedule
