I'm about 99% sure we are going to have to put my dog to sleep tonight :(

Yesterday he was very VERY lethargic and basically wouldn't eat or hardly drink either, and he seemed like a ragdoll as far as his reactions. Then it looked like he crapped in the house, but it was like diarehea (sp?) and looked a wierd color. So this morning when I wake up I am the only one home and my mom left for woirk already. I couldn't find my dog either. And I saw a wierd looking puddle of something, but it looked just like liquid diarehea, but with no solids in it at all. However when I was cleaning it up, it did not smell like crap ... it had a wierd odor to it, so I don't even know what it is. And I eventually found him and he was just lying in a closet kinda of shaking and would hardly respond to me. He sometimes would get up and walk like 2 steps, then lie back down.

I just got back from the gym, gone for about an hour and 45 mins, and I came home and he's behind the couch just shaking a little bit and hardly responding still. I think it's his time to go.

He is 14 years old and is a little maltese. I am 22 now and have had him since I was 8. I am so sad now and this week I have my finals, not to mention a term paper due tomorrow. And my last final I need to do well on or else I won't even graduate. This is not the greatest week for me to deal with all this. I am so sad right now and I really don't want to say goodbye to him ... :( :( :(

That really sucks. Remember, it's part of the Pet / Keeper deal that they will probably go before we do.
Try to do it with some courage.
< Had to do it a couple of times now. :(

Such a shame. We had a little laphso apso named patches that we put to sleep 2 years ago. Like your dog he was 14 years old. We could have prolonged his life but what is the use? He was going blind and had other health issues.

:frown:

This is precisely the reason I am reluctant to get a dog. :( 15 years is a short period of time in the grand scheme of things. I know I've said this many times...

When I have a kid in the next couple years, he/she will lose a good companion 10-15 years later and that will hurt like it's hurting you now... :(

The little ones are even more upsetting to think about. I moved away from my parents' 2 years ago and they have a 6 year old Pom that I still call mine. I can't bear to think about the future...

Yea his vision and hearing is not the greatest either, I don't even know how well he can see or hear, but I know it is hardly.

I'm pretty sure my mom is going tot ake him to the vet. I work in an hour and 20 mins though so I won't be around. And honestly, I can say that I don't want to go to the vet with my mom. I just don't think I could bear to go there with her, especially when I just go look at him behind the couch right now and see him there. It is so painful to see him right now :(

I had to put my beloved dog for 9 years to sleep last year due to Prostate Cancer. I waited a little to long to put him down because I didn't have the heart to do it. Eventually half of his body die and he put out this foul smell of dead flesh. I finally decided is time to take him to the pound and put his down. One of the saddest day in my life. If they ask you if you would like to see your dog one last time after they put him down, don't do it. Those images will haunt for life. Good luck bro.

Make sure either you or your Mom takes your dog to the vet first.

The vet is best able to determine whether you need to put your dog down, or whether this is a wholly treatable condition.

Make the appointment NOW, please!

Instead of just looking, why don't you comfort him? I'm sure you feel bad, but how do you think the dog feels? Quit thinking about yourself and try to be there for him on his last hour..

My dog had similar symptoms. It had eaten some slug bait that was out in the yard. My mother took it to the vet and they pumped the dog's stomach. It is ok now.

It's a cliche, but dying is a part of life.

First, take him to a vet. As others have said, he may have a condition that can be easily treated.

Second, if you do have to put him down, just try to remember all the good times. I will be devastated when my dog goes, but I will never regret having her, regardless of the pain of her passing.

I remember vividly the day I had to put my dog to sleep. This dog lived 18 years and was with me ever since I could remember. I remember the day I got him, I was about 5. When it came his time I made sure I was there for him right in his face so he could smell me. I like to think it helped him. Throughout those 18 years he was there for me every time I was sick or need him. It was the least I could do for him. It's not easy and I'm getting a bit emotional writing this, over 10 years now. He was the best! No dog since has compared to him. IF you do have to let him go BE THERE! You WILL regret it later if you are not.

On the other hand I have a dog now that about one year ago they wanted to put him down. I decided his condition could be treated (I was careful to weigh his quality of life). He's due to go back for a yearly checkup, I can't wait to see the look on the faces of the techs and vets seeing him a year after they would have put him down.

Good luck! Think of your dog not you. He was there for you for so long.

omg, i have like a 12 year old maltese and he is starting to show his age. I've had him ever since i was 8 so I can kinda relate to how you're feeling, especially after this one day a few years back when I thought he wasn't going to make it after he ate some bad food. Do you have any pics? I hope all is well for that little fella. My best advice is to take him/her to the vet asap, as you never know how strong those little hearts of theirs really are.

Girls make me sad... -_-;///

And Euna was her name,
A not so very ordinary girl or name.
But who's to blame?
For a love that wouldn't bloom
For the hearts that never played in tune.
Like a lovely melody that everyone can sing,
Take away the words that rhyme it doesn't mean a thing.

And Euna was her name.
We tripped the light and danced together to the moon,
But where was June.
No it never came around.
If it did it never made a sound,
Maybe I was absent or was listening too fast,
Catching all the words, but then the meaning going past,

But God I miss the girl,
And I'd go a thousand times around the world just to be
Closer to her than to me.

And Euna was her name,
I never knew her, but I loved her just the same,
I loved her name.
Wish that I had found the way
And the reasons that would make her stay.
I have learned to lead a life apart from all the rest.
I can't have the one I want, I'll do without the best.

But how I miss the girl
And I'd go a million times around the world just to say
She had been mine for a day.
