Well, I opened it with my ID card yesterday, and also today the landlord was back, so he gave me the key 🙂

that's comforting to know. Sounds like it's time to get a top latch in addition to your dead bolt.

Didn't you read? He HAS a deadbolt, it just wasn't locked.

didn't you read? I said IN ADDITION to his dead bolt. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yes. That means he has a locking doorknob AND deadbolt on his door. When he left the last time, he locked only the doorknob lock and not the deadbolt. So he HAS another lock on the door.

I seriously can't understand the 4th grade level of comprehension here. Bmacd is bringing to light that without a top latch (read as top latch, then a deadbolt, then a bottom lock), anyone with a proper key can get in. People put a lot of trust in their landlords....I don't. Mine even brought up the fact I have a lock though my back door chain....he said it should be undoable without a key....I replied if he can make it so that I can unchain it from the outside or unscrew the mount...i'd be all for it.

I needed a new key for my garage door....it took the locksmith about 5-10 mins with a key blank and a file to make me a near perfect key. My grandfather was a locksmith. He had devices that would open locks like magic.

Ah, OK. I understand now.

That said, many leases have clauses making it a breach of the lease to add additional locks that make it impossible for the landlord to gain access to the property.

Also, if this is a quality property, the landlord has monthly visits from an exterminator arranged and they must gain access to each unit.

Go to a locksmith place and get yourself some lock picks. I can open up just about anything in under 30secs. (lots of practice, the circuit breakers at my house are in my housemates room and hes never around)

if there is a top latch wouldn't the person have to be inside to latch it. therefore anyone that comes in would be able to either get in, since you can't latch the latch from the outside, (if you leave for the day) or wait for you to open the door. doesn't really make sense to me that a landlord would have that rule. i could see them maybe thinking you would mess up the installation of it or something.
