I am so fvcked :(

So I was moving stuff into my new apartment today, moved most of it into the garage. But when I went to the apartment itself, I noticed the key was gone. The landlord gave me the keys on this POS keyring that ended up breaking. Well, at least I have the garage door opener so I can move everything there and vacate the old apartment as planned.
I'll call the landlord tomorrow, but he said he's going to be on vacation, though I forgot till when.

well.... look in the yellow pages. call a locksmith. tell him "hi I lost my key. can you come over make me a new one?|

Umm, there has to be someone in the office that can give you the spare.....

How much does this locksmith service cost? I've never done that. I'll keep it in mind.
This is a small apt in a duplex that I am renting from a private landlord. I don't think he has an office per se.

its about 40 dollars. Worth it if it gets you into your apartment without pissing off the landlord.

Also, what exactly do they do? Do they pick the lock or do they break it and you have to buy a new one?

hmm not too sure, all i know is my neighbor had to do that when she accidentally locked herself out and they charged her 40 bucks. just call them up tomorrow and you should be fine.

well, I am gonna call up the landlord tomorrow and see if he is back from vacation. If he's not, I'll call the locksmith.

Also, I didn't deadbolt it, just used the bottom lock that just shuts locked. So I am going to try using a credit card to open it tomorrow.

Oh yeah, that works real well on my door, definitely try that

Did you check any of the windows to make sure they weren't unlocked?

Hope everything works out for you!

Well, I opened it with my ID card yesterday, and also today the landlord was back, so he gave me the key 🙂

that's comforting to know. Sounds like it's time to get a top latch in addition to your dead bolt.

didn't you read? I said IN ADDITION to his dead bolt. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yes. That means he has a locking doorknob AND deadbolt on his door. When he left the last time, he locked only the doorknob lock and not the deadbolt. So he HAS another lock on the door.

I seriously can't understand the 4th grade level of comprehension here. Bmacd is bringing to light that without a top latch (read as top latch, then a deadbolt, then a bottom lock), anyone with a proper key can get in. People put a lot of trust in their landlords....I don't. Mine even brought up the fact I have a lock though my back door chain....he said it should be undoable without a key....I replied if he can make it so that I can unchain it from the outside or unscrew the mount...i'd be all for it.

I needed a new key for my garage door....it took the locksmith about 5-10 mins with a key blank and a file to make me a near perfect key. My grandfather was a locksmith. He had devices that would open locks like magic.
