Major complaints:

The top left and right corners of the LCD have "water ripples" if I touch the side of the screen. This ripple lasts up to 6 seconds. The right ripple spot is bigger than the left. ANY vibration to the screen will cause these annoying ripple oscillations (the "spring constant" of the oscillation is very small, meaning long oscillation cycles).

Don't try to pick up the laptop with you right hand when it's open. The plastic under the DVD/CDRW drive is so flimsy that it bends and creaks. If you get this laptop, you are going to be worrying about breaking it all the time. Make sure you not only get the 3 year warranty, but also the "cover all scenario" warranty.

I have to say the 600m chasis is the FLIMSIEST notbook case I've seen. My other comparisons are Sotec (YES SOTEC IS all-magnesium case, very sturdy), Compaq, toshiba, fujitsu, IBM, SONY, VPR. None of these screens ripple if you

Although I got a great deal on it (<$1000) I rather spend a bit more on a Fujitsu S2010. Better specs, and quality. OR even the Sotec 3150.

I am going to wait for the fujitsu S6210 though.

Search for 600m ripple on the dell forum, you'll find it. A lot of people have it, and DEll says it's a design issue, not a "flaw". I think different 600Ms reported to have different "size" of the ripple, different location of the ripple, and different duration and period of ripple. Mine is so sensitive that it can probably detect underground seismic activity. Some people say they have no problem (I think the SXGA+ is more prone to ripples though). Initially, I thought wow, Dell has a cool animating wallpaper. It's that unacceptable!

Another complaint is the screen is noticeablity brighter at the bottom than the top.

Yep, I saw a lot of people complain about this uneven lighting/coloring issue (ripples, as you call them) on their tech support forums.. My friend's Dell has that. I wouldn't want a laptop with such a problem...

I don't really have a problem with screen distortions unless I press on the back of the lid for some reason. I don't find it a problem. I also find the plastic case a step up from the i8100 I used to have :) It may not be the strongest case in the world, but its definitly not the weakest.

I'm very happy with my 600m

This is part of the reason I recommend the D600 series. The LCD assembly is completely magnesium. Touching or adjusting the LCD causes no distortions whatsoever.

Actually I just got my 600M today and dont have any of the ripples. Overall Im very happy with the 600M considering the $1000 price. Although I wished the intel wifi adapter had a little better range though. My old vaio with the orinoco card seemed to have better reception.

Heh... flimsy case... Sounds like the same problem I had with my Insipron 8000. The old Dell 5000/7500 series seemed to be built so much better compared to current build quality of their offerings. :(

The inspiron 8x00 case is absolutly nothing like the new case. You can actually pick the laptop up without ithe whole thing bending on you :)

more or less agree; i have some ripples if i the laptop is moving and of course ripples if I apply pressure to the back of the screen...but no worse than any other dell laptop ive used (old p2 latitudes...)

compared to a g4 powerbook it is a little flimsy...but for 1100 for a full loaded laptop is not a bad deal

I got to play around with my friend's 600m for a while and I didn't notice any rippling. My Inspiron 8200 ripples when I apply pressure to the LCD or when I tilt the screen back but they disappear right away.

I really like the new case design for the 600m. My Inspiron 8200 feels like it'll span in half at any moment.
