I think it varies per person. A lot of people will tell you go cold turkey. Many will say wean yourself off of it slowly, and others will say use the patch/gum. It just depends on the individual.

Which way are you inclined to try?

Congrats on your decision to quit. :)

I'm thinking the patch. The gums seems like it could get expensive but, in a way I just wanna kinda do it with out anything.

Cold turkey is the only way to go man. I know at least 2 former smokers who tried quitting with gum, patches, etc., and they always relapsed back to smoking before going cold turkey.

Just get something to do for a couple days, some sort of project to keep cigarettes off your mind. Also, buy some mint toothpicks to chew on when you get cravings

Oh, and absolutely do NOT hang around smokers while you're trying to quit.

If you would like to do it without anything, then take the leap and go for it. If that doesn't work out so well, switch tactics and get the patch.

Post in this thread how you feel, etc. Atoters have been very helpful in the past to help others kick the habit.

That seems like a fairly good strategy, I think I'll try cold turkey and if that doesn't work then, I try the ole patch.
I'm already craving a smoke but, I don't want to have health problems in the future from smoking so this is just something I'm going to have to do.

A few tips: 1) Break the routine. Know when your favorite times to smoke and do your best to change those routines. 2) Try to give smoking a negative spin. Whenever you see or think about smoking, imagine something utterly disgusting. For example, if you go to light up, picture yourself lighting dog poop, putting it in your mouth, and inhaling. If dog poop's not gross enough, think rotten maggoty meat or whatever disgutsts you the most.

I tried to quit many times and tried many things without success. Finally I discovered a simple way which allows me to stop smoking for a few months now: just think about the ones you love and how they would suffer from your loss.

First quit smoking your regular cigs and transition to 1mg lights. These things work wonders, from what I heard. They contain almost no nicotine, and when you get used to smoking them instead of your regular ones, it would be quite easy to quit cold turkey b/c there won't be any nicotine hunger. Keep in mind many smokers aren't addicted to the nicotine itself, they just like to inhale smoke.

Also, it's amazing how being or becoming religious helps quitting smoking. Just think that it's a sinful, unholy habit. And it might help quitting smoking quite a lot.

Here is what worked for me.

I first went to the doctor and got a prescription for Wellbutrin and took it for a week as prescribed. After the end of the first week I quit tobacco and any caffeine intake. The lack of caffeine makes it a bit easier, believe it or not. I had a lot less jitters. I continued the Wellbutrin through two fills of the medicine and then after the second fill I quit taking it altogether. Then I allowed myself to have caffeine again. Not once did I have ANY cravings for tobacco at all.

I'm free! :D

I did try the gum and patches... neither worked for me more than 2 weeks. :(

My Grandfather smoked for over 50 years and quit cold turkey the day he found out his son had cancer. It can be done. I've never smoked, but I think I'd try going cold turkey before anything else.

psh quitting smoking is easy, i've done it dozens of times!!

seriously though, i smoked for a year and a half or so, then quit cold turkey for 6 months (i got a job where you could smoke WHILE you worked, why not start back up?)

then smoked another year and a half or so, and quit for 3 months

i'm probably going to try the new lozenges when i quit (probably not for GOOD but for a long while) this time

Zyban aka wellbutrin worked wonders for me but I only needed it for a month and I seem to be doing really well... I quit on Dec 1st and have had no cravings. The zyban did make me a little nutty though, I couldnt sleep and when I finally did sleep I couldnt get out of bed... Cold turkey is the best because you no longer have nicotine in your system, so even though I used zyban I consider it to be cold turkey.

I think I'm finally going to make it this time!!

< 6 year smoker, 2 mo clean. The physical addition only lasts a few days, after that, it is all psychological. I quit cold and it was bad for a couple weeks but now I don't even think about it. It really is just a matter of deciding to not smoke and sticking through with it. I just try to imagine the rest of my life not smoking and being healthy. I find myself much more calm and anxiety free without cigarettes, not to mention much better breath...

Good Luck!

Word. I quit officially on the 27th of October. Not one craving. I have been off of the med since early December. I feel so much better about myself now.
