Okay I got in my car this morning to go shopping. I'm humming along when all of a sudden the car lurches and feels sluggish. "Oh crap, flat tire!" I think, because this felt all too familiar. But though I listened for the tell-tale noise of a flat tire on asphalt I didn't hear it. I pulled over and checked the tires--all were fine.
Then I noticed that when coasting, my tach needle kept jumping between 1200 and 1800 rpm, as if the engine kept shifting between 1st and 2nd gear. "Oh crap, either the tranny's gone or something's wack with my center diff/AWD setup (Subaru Legacy GT). So when I got to the mall I called my dad to see what he suggested.
"Check the oil son."
"Oil? WTF? No warning lights dad, and engine temp seems fine. No smoke, no noise."
"Just check the damn oil!"
"But I just did an oil change at the dealership 3 weeks a..."
"CHECK THE F**KING OIL!"
So I did my shopping and waited a few hours before coming out to check the oil. I pull the dipstick, wipe, put it back, pull it out and...
WTF? This can't be right. The dipstick is bone dry. I press it against the towel and yes there is faint oil residue, but only on the side edge--not covering the stick. I check it again. And again. Then a guy comes over to help and I show him what I'm seeing.
"Dude, do NOT start the car. There is NO oil in the engine. I don't know how the fvck you got here without the engine seizing and conking out. There's a gas station down the street. Buy 4 quarts of oil and filler up before you even think about putting the key in the ignition."
Ouch. I bought 4 quarts but after the first quart the dipstick was reading 3/4 full. I put in another full quart just to be safe and kept the rest in my trunk.
How the fvck did this happen? How come there were no warning signs? I live at an apartment complex and park in a different spot every night, so I'd never notice leaking oil. I know my fuel economy has been really sh*tty ever since I got the car last year--is my engine just burning oil?
The crazy thing is, I asked my dad how he knew and he said this isn't the first time this happened with this car. It happened randomly once when he owned it--that's how he knew.
The engine has been through so much abuse--first my dad drove it without any oil. Then my sister owned the car and didn't change the oil FOR A WHOLE FRICKING YEAR! Now I've been driving it without oil. This thing has 113,000 miles and just keeps on ticking.
