Placed an order for 15 chicks (damn efowl and their 15 chick minimum order!). They are for the eggs and not eating. I got:

5 easter eggers
5 Barred Plymouth Rock
5 Austra White

How are these breeds?

Anything special I should do when I get them, outside of giving them feed and water? I already bought their chick feed starter kit.

When you get them, dip every one of their heads into the waterer. Watch their butts - sometimes they get a clump of dried crap that sticks to their feathers. If you don't clean it off, they will die. Out of 100 chicks, it's usually not more than half a dozen that have this problem.

Time for me to get ready for an order of pheasants; thinking of getting 100.

I have feral chickens all over my place. You go from 10 to 1000 overnight. It's amazing how fast they reproduce.

Same here. The rotten eggs are smelling up the yard. More good eggs than I'd ever need tho'

The dogs keep finding and eating them too so they perpetually smell like egg now.

chickens don't lay eggs forever.

you are going to have to 'harvest' the ones that can't lay eggs any more.

that should make for an interesting pic post here.

My little town is working on a ban to include chickens and bees. I'm fine with regulations for them, no roosters, minimum space requirements, etc. But with the local food movement gaining strength, I think the mayor is on the wrong side of this one.

How much daily work is involved with a dozen chickens?

I have heard that being a chicken farmer is easy money.....just a HUGE initial investment.

What's the reason for this? To let them know where the water is?

Yes

Get started on your coop. The time for them to move from their brooder box to the coop will be here in no time.

The scariest thing is calculating the cost of your first egg...
