I am looking for a modern printer

One of my printers went bust, an old Samsung from around 2000.

I'm looking for something contemporary, preferably under 300 bucks, and with a decent ink consumption standard.

For example, my Canon eats up ink cartridges, and they're quite expensive, so I was looking for something like a laser jet. I'm not sure efficient they are versus toner dust.

If anyone could give me any clues, I would appreciate it. I haven't been following the printer market lately.

I tried browsing Anandtech, but no dice. :(

If you help me, I will post n00dz.

You intentionally broke the forum rules about posting in the correct forum. Had this been a first offense, I probably would have let you off with a warning; instead, it's a few days off. -Anandtech Moderator DrPizza

Go grab a color laser. They've got them for under $300 bucks and you can't be a laser for sheer number of prints per cartridge. Plus it's faster too. I've been mulling over getting one myself. See my post in General Hardware here http://forums.anandtech.com/me...y&keyword1=color+laser

Probably a better forum to ask on too.

Edit: One caveat. If you print photos on glossy paper you're better off sticking with an inkjet.

I have a laser jet and I haven't had any problems with toner dust. The 'starter catridge' is good for 3,000+ pages on the Brother printer I got and is still going strong. I don't know if there are any current deals out there but I got my 2040 for $25 after MIR (It's black and white)

Side note: It does draw enough power to activate my battery backup every time it starts up though

Since you already posted this in the peripherals forum, you already know what I'm about to say.

Wrong forum.

I would be calling samsung to get my NEW printer fixed or replaced if you truly got it in 2009 as you say.

Oops sorry guys, I meant 2000.

And yes, I know Tallbill, but sometimes I need an answer. It is rather aggravating when a thread has a lot of views, but no responses. I figure why not post in the forum where people are very smart and go to a lot?

Also, do you want networking capability?

These are important before we can post a good opinion.

We have some of these printers at work:

very simple, but the toner seems to last a while

1) Network is a must, I assumed all USB printers came with that, but yes, it is a def.

2) Color is not essential, I already have a Canon color printer. Most of my documents are school work/work related and therefore in black n white.

That's why I'm looking for something that's efficient, fast, gets the job done, and isn't a POS.

I picked up a Canon networkable AIO laser printer through the Hot Deals forum a couple of years ago. $119 shipped for a GREAT printer. (regularly $499 IIRC)

Haven't seen any similar deals in a while, but IMO, that's the place to watch.

Also, sign up for Buy.com's daily/weekly specials newsletter. Some very good deals there from time to time. (that's where the Canon came from)

Now I just have to find a good quality toner cartridge that's less than the $85 Canon.
I too needed mostly B&W printing for school, and this met my needs perfectly.

That's the thing, mine is a Canon MP 160, and it's...decent. But it's not something I want to blow ink cartridges on when it comes to school work.

I think for me, Canon is out, just because their ink is expensive.

color toner cartridges are hella expensive, though. I think our lab printer sucks (HP 2025). Maybe the expense wouldn't matter if they actually lasted for several years or whatever people claim, but I have to order new ones every 2 or 3 months now ($400 total).

We print a lot, but I think that's ridiculous.
