Sony and Samsung are about on par IMO. You should not get a CRT projection set though, too many maintenance issues, and the picture gets really crappy really fast. Go for LCD/Plasma w/ a smaller screen if you can.

-Plasma

If you're even going to consider that route, Plasma shouldn't be a consideration. LCD is head and shoulders a better purchase.

Plasma is a no, no at high altitudes, which is where I am

Well, for some reason, the CRT projection sets reduce to 1/2 brightness within 6 months to a year. It may look great in the showroom, but after some use it gets waaay too dark for my liking.

Then there's the bulbs. You usually have to spend hundreds of dollars on bulbs every year because they burn out.

Then there's the calibration. The optics in those sets are very sensitive, and AFAIK you need to pay out at least $100 anually to have the set calibrated.

The image quality is also worse, they use up more electricity, and there's also the issue that a CRT is pulsating at 60hz whereas an LCD is pretty much a static image; much easier on the eyes.

Hmm....I didnt realize CRT projection units were so....high maintenance. Anyone chime in who has one and give me the lowdown with their experiences?

Whichever set a buy, it needs to have at least a DVI and/or HDMI input. No questions about it.
