Toshiba

Samsung

Sony

All three are roughly the same price although the Sammy is only on sale till 9/30. Sammy has a DVI input, Tosh has HDMI, Sony has both.

What do you guys think?

wow...for the same price, how can you pass up a whopping 13 inches??

it'll probably be several years before HDMI is a biggie...but u want futureproof...so you've answered ur own question ;)

I hear ya about the larger screen Sammy:), but isnt it true that flat CRT's (as opposed to projection) still produce the best possible picture?

if the sony has both and is nearly the same size as the sammy with and good brand name backing it...whats the issue? the choice would be clear here (for me) hehe

I have had my own mixed experiences with Sony. Although I have never owned a Sony TV, I have owned other Sony products that left me feeling let down:(

i agree with you. not all sony products are teh r0x0rZ but all the main tvs in my house and several other friends' households are sony tvs. im talkin from small 27' wega all the way to 60 lcd projection. i've had my own issues with sony myself...

for example...one tv we had...the speakers magnetism kept "leaking" or something and changed the colors in the corners of the screen where the speakers resided. have you ever held a magnet to a CRT? colors change..distortion...etc. we just had color change

well long story short, they sent people to fix it twice and the problem kept coming back. they finally just replaced it with a new unit.

my other sony 27in tv lasted for 10 yrs problem free, then died. overall...a few bad and lotsa good is my conclusion.

with tvs, make sure you have a good warranty and then brand name sorta becomes transparent since sony probably doesnt even manufacture alot of their stuff.

Yeah, I have already made up my mind to pay for a full coverage extended warranty no matter which TV I get simply because I have two little ones who will definitely put it through its paces;) I am in fact leaning towards the Sony for the reason you mentioned....both DVI and HDMI:)

Me too. One Sony VCR (expensive editing one) my dad had burned out, his Sony DVD burner doesn't burn anymore, a sony CRT he had had issues, so I've never bought anything from Sony. Just another cheap Japanese brand in my experience...

The only thing you need for future-proofing (for all practical purposes) is HDCP. HDCP is available via DVI or HDMI. Somehow you have to find out if that Samsung one supports HDCP via DVI. If it does, I wouldn't worry about HDMI too much because that's an excellent deal. If not, I'd say none of those.

Samsung has a pretty good rep for their HDTVs. Sony has some nice ones, but also a not so great rep for true quality. Not a big fan of Toshiba, but that is a nice looking (spec wise) TV, and it being a direct view means it'll offer better picture quality than the other two (well, most likely).

It is true that flat CRTs still offer the best image quality.

Hmm, thats a tough one. They all look pretty nice.

Any ideas or suggestions for a comparable TV right at $1000?

EDIT: Should I really be concerned with HDCP so much?

You might bounce your question off the folks over at AVS Forums as well. There are lots of people on those board that really know TVs.

Since I own that TV (I'm primarily a Sony man, but for the money, that TV was a damn good buy, and it's actually the 5th TV in the house, and the middle sized). Perhaps before making comments like Magnet Box, you might consider actually checking it out. ;)

Get back to me on how it looks in 5+ years. Magnavox isn't exactly known for longevity...

I have a 32" normal Magnavox that's about 6 years old that looks as good as the day I bought it. Phillips Magnavox, no matter now YOU want to spin it, is still a good quality manufacturer. Maybe you should do some research on Phillips and get back to ME. ;)

Sony and Samsung are about on par IMO. You should not get a CRT projection set though, too many maintenance issues, and the picture gets really crappy really fast. Go for LCD/Plasma w/ a smaller screen if you can.

-Plasma

If you're even going to consider that route, Plasma shouldn't be a consideration. LCD is head and shoulders a better purchase.
