I am hosting multiple site one multiple account

alfa147x

Lifer
For my customers sites I have multiple 1&1 accounts, i have about 10 customers the sites (each) dont take up 10 GB of space and use about 50 - 70 mb of Monthly Transfer

Would it be better if I just got one dedicated web server from go daddy?

Thanks

First, how has your experience been with 1&1? Any issues?

Second, if you feel their service is good for what you're doing, then yes, that's something you should consider. However, think about it from their point of view.

With shared account servers, they cram hundreds of accounts on individual servers, and this is *very* lucrative for them, probably their bread and butter. Dedicated servers take up similar space in the DC, require similar power consumption, etc. and they only sell 1 I billable account to each, not nearly as lucrative for them. For a company like 1&1, with their pricing and reputation and reviews in mind, I would be weary of how well they take care of those dedicated servers. It's in their interest to take care of the shared accounts because if a server is down, rather than 1 person complaining, they'll now have hundreds.

I've tried to keep my personal point of view about 1&1 out of this, but it's probably easy to see where I stand on the topic of using them.

I just realized that you actually said a dedicated server from godaddy, but the basic principles that I've mentioned still apply. I personally would advise against any of these choices and would either stick with what you have now, or find a provider that can handle your situation a bit better. Your situation doesn't require a dedicated server, but rather a proper reseller account.

So far i have not had any issues at all great so far, 4 years!

Dedicated means that a server computer is assigned to you and you decide what to do with it.

The idea is to let you have a computer that is connected directly to the Internet in a place that has direct connection rather than in your home or office where you have a connection through an ISP.

Hosting account gives you space for your own use on a server that host many accounts.

Reseller give you space on a shared server as a Hosting server. However it is configured in a way that you can independently host few domains on your space, and resell the use of them to other users. I own 6 domains, so I have a reseller account. I do not sell any space to any one I just use it for these 6 domains instead of buying 6 Hosting accounts (like I resell to myself).

All of this is nice and dandy what really matters is how much of a server power you need, and which one of the plans would provide you with the most cost effective deal.

So read what each plan provides (Space/Bandwidth/Price), make a numerical comparison, and make your own decision since only you know what you really need.

Oh ok, thanks a lot wow because i don't have any web server experience and would have just thrown away money... lol thanks!

so what is the difference between a resellers plan and a dedicated ?

To expand upon JackMDS's informative reply.

This is the basic hierarchy of most consumer web hosting:

Data Center --> Dedicated Server --> Semi-Dedicated --> VPS --> Reseller --> Virtual Shared

If you don't need the power of a dedicated server, I would highly recommend a reseller or VPS hosting account.

If you have more than two domains, a resellers account makes it easy and affordable to host multiple domains.

Do you still have multiple 1&1 accounts or did you consolidate them?

I do still have the multiple 1&1 accounts i plan on putting them into a resellers after the winter break

You don't even need a reseller's account if you're doing all of the management yourself and do not wish to give your customers access to control panels and account settings as they can screw things up.

Good on you for using 1&1.

They've been regarded as a not so good provider on ATOT but I find them to be extremely stable in the last 5 or 6 years I've been using them - their systems are clustered versus many other cheap providers that put your account on a single homemade box stuffed into a space shared rack with just a few guys running around keeping things up while lacking standard protocols such as backup scheduling etc. They also have 24/7 phone support which is nice where in the event that something does happen, you could always tell your customers that you're on the case with them on the phone which is a lot more professional rather than telling them you've been going back n forth via an email queue - regardless of downtime.

Just my 2.
