I would recommend that for your first time, you rent the snowboard, boots, AND a helmet, because you'll be doing a lot of wiping out.

Take it from someone who used to be a ski instructor. And if you're worried you are going to look like a dork with the helmet on, helmets are becoming more and more fashionable these days.

Snowboarding is evil, and pay for the equipment, it's all necessary. Right down to the gloves. No, mittens don't work (as a friend of mine found out last year during her first skiing experience). But you know what? It's WAY worth it.

Because you'd kill yourself. The boots strap into the bindings in a very specific way.

More than that, the boot makes it so your ankle cannot move. If you skied in normal boots, your ankle would break rather badly.

The reason you can't use your regular boots is 1) they won't strap into the skiis/board. 2.) you'll break your ankles trying to ski in regular boots, but it's moot point because they won't work anyway. Ever actually seen ski boots or ski boarding boots?

I used to love skiing. Every winter we would go somewhere; and every other year we would go far like Vail, Beaver Creak or Park City. It's a blast. Well worth it. Tell us how it goes.

I have a pair of ski boots I'll sell you. Used only one season about 15 years ago. I'll throw in the polls and pants for free.

Yes, you definitely need all the equipment. The boots are not just normal boots, they provide the proper support, protection, and strap/snap onto the snowboard with the correct fit. I wouldn't say you need a helmet, but that's your own choice. I've done both skiing and snowboarding, and you'll have great time with either. Your first time going will probably be frustrating, and definitely painful, but stick with it, it's worth it. Have fun!

if this is your first time skiing/boarding, i suggesting renting a pair of skiboards (snowblades) because they have the shortest learning curve IMO.

also buy a book on how to ski, some are pretty good:) you'll get the very basics on how to do beginner V turns and stops from the ski class package, but once you get ok at that having a book to give you an idea of how your body form should be really helps. atleast it helped me:) that or you could spring for advanced or individual lessons:) if you don't have correct form and try to force turns and stuff your probably gonna hurt something

will i look like a dork if i use my full face dirtbike helmet? cause i mean..if it's designed for riding at 60mph in the desert .. it should handle some snow.. i dont feel like buying ANOTHER helmet for a new sport cause this one was expensive enough

Skis, Boots, and Poles $ 19.50

That is your best option. Unless you like to fall on your ass, go skiing. A helmet would be a good idea but you wont break 20mph unless you catch on real quick. and TAKE A LESSON! You wont be able to teach yourself unless you have a partner or are an abid rollarblader. I hear that if you skateboard you can catch on to snowbarding pretty easily but i have never tried. But go skiing. About the boot thing, if you are skiing you will not be able to get on your edges or make the ski go at an angle so you can turn with normal boots. You have to have the ski boots. Just rent for now, unless you have lots of $$ in wich case why do you worry? :) Get a group lesson, remember that. Or if you have the $$ get a private lesson. Just take it slow and remember to come back the next day!

Here is the best way to have fun at a ski lodge for a minimum amount of money. Go to your doctor and have him make a cast for your leg and then split it so as to be removeable and replacebale. Go to ski resort and lay around in bed the first day. that evening put the cast on and hobble down to the firepit or wherever everyone gathers in the evening. Plop down in a good chair order a dirnk and a glass of water, take a couple of asprins and moan a little, a few women will come over and try and comfort you about your skiing accident, the rest you can figure out for yourself.

someone mentioned a helmut, probably a good idea although many ppl don't use em. probably why so many ppl die:p anyways, can't stress how important it is to learn how to turn and slow down/control b4 zooming around. its relatively easy to go fast and straight.. but its #%@ dangerous if thats all you can do. don't think your all that cuz u go fast if you can't control:)

You're the first person I've ever heard of to use a book that teaches how to ski. I didn't even know how-to-ski books even existed. Heh, you learn something new everyday.

Baw, i dont think you could learn it from a book. Try a movie if you fear meeting someone who is better at something that you do.
