Getting a car depends on how long you are staying, what you want to get done, where you are staying.
If you just want to hang out in the casinos and stay on the strip, a car is not necessary.

Nope. We had a car there and just parked it at the Sahara and walked around and used "The Deuce" the whole time we were there. Also, in my limited experience, people that drive in downtown Las Vegas use their horns WAY too much. Also, I knew you were talking about Las Vegas, NV, but I had to think about it a second, as there is a "relatively" populous city by the same name here in New Mexico...

Not unless you want to go to In & Out, but you really don't need to because it's like the worst In & Out of the lot.

yep you wont need a car if u stay on the strip. However if you want to visit other places such as casinos off strip (or maybe visit hover dam), you might want to rent one.

For a first time vegas goer, staying on the strip is enough.

Some suggestions:
- Visit the strip hotels. especially these hotels: bellagio, paris, wynn, mandalay bay, mirage, caesar palace. Most of these hotels are at the south side of the strip. Best time for walking is at night, you can watch the bellagio fountain show, mirage volcano, treasure island pirate show for free.
- Eat dinner buffet at the bellagio or wynn.
- watch a vegas show. the cirque du soleil O show in bellagio is good.
- Do some gambling. I personally like poker since your money will last a while. MGM grand has the best poker room IMO.
- choose one of the upscale restaurants and have dinner there. Vegas now has amazing food (albeit expensive)
- if you are into clubbing, vegas has excellent clubs as well

No car necessary. You can walk to most places. Bring a few thousand to gamble with. Go eat at a few nice buffets. Go see a show. We saw La Reve (spelling?) last year and it was great. Also, if you're staying at one of the better hotels, try to upgrade your room when checking in. Sometimes they have very cheap specials. Oh, and bring good walking shoes.

damn their poker room!!!!!!!! actually i do enjoy it but i went last week and took a couple of bad beats. actually more like i took a bad beat, went on tilt and donked off the rest of my chips. but usually the tables there are kind to me but it wasnt meant to be this last time around. the bellagio poker room was a bit more forgiving so the trip wasnt a complete bust.

sorry to pick on your post though. just reading it reminded me of my play and triggered my response.

I went there in early March, we rented a car for one day to goto the dam and lake mead area, then dinner off the strip.

i came in for just a little bit over the table minimum after just having my ass handed to me at mgm. try and limp in? bullied out. raise with a marginal hand and hope to steal? reraised and bullied out. finally woke up with ladies, got someone to bite and after i increased my stack the bullying stopped. but for a second i was considering looking for a casino similiar to 'vegas vacation' where i could play rock, paper, scissors or guess which hand.

Caesar's Palace may have one of the best Poker rooms in Vegas with a huge tournament room separated from the rest of the tables. I suggest that novices seek other casinos for tourneys with fewer players and smaller buyins. They have reasonable buy-ins for tourneys that don't have rebuys. Some of the free stuff is pretty good entertainment including the Bellagio fountains and Conservatory and Gardens. As previously mentioned the volcano at the Mirage, the Sirens at TI, and the Fremont Experience downtown at 8 pm are worth checking out. You should go to tripadvisor.com and see the top rated Vegas attractions and for the skinny on the hotels, poker rooms, pools, and eats see cheapovegas.com. I'll be back in Vegas on May 27th for five nights so if you leave some money there don't worry I'll try to get it back.

This trip I may not do too much gambling. I'll play in a few tourneys, and maybe some Black Jack and slots. I plan to spend some time at the pool, take in a few shows, and people watch at some the nightclubs. So you probably won't be cleaning up after me.

taxi cab. you will waste a LOT of time getting lost trying to get to an address you found on a flyer on the street if you dont. other than that your better off walking. MGM and luxor are good first timer spots to stay as they are off the main strip and not too far from it either.

I was there mid March, I would definitely recommend renting a car and drive up to Mount Charleston and Death Valley. Founded a coupon from Avis and rented a car for $56 for a day.
