You really need to take into account what type of gal she is. Is she the kind that wants it done "classically" i.e. after a nice dinner, on bended knee? is she about spectical? would she love for you to do it in front of a lot ofpeople?

It just depends on what she would NOT expect!

Ring should be no smaller than 1 carat.
Women likes to show off and compare.. 1 carat is acceptable to most occasions.
If it's less than 1 carat, the often feel inferior to other women..

Not true.... the carat is simply the weight of the diamond.... if you get a .8 or better with good table dimensions and a good sized girdle... it can actually be bigger than a 1 carat. Furthermore... depending on your budget you may decide you want to go quality over size.... it really depends on the girl. My GF for example would rather have a .85 F VS2 than a 1.0 H SI1, which are approx the same price range.

White gold does, too as the powdercoat wears away and exposes the yellowish metal underneath, but you can get it recoated periodically.

Platinum is also suprisingly heavy.
