IBM makes good drives. I would return that drive if it`s making all these weird noises.

sounds like there's something wrong with it. i'd call their product support line and ask them if they'll replace the drive for you, but make sure you back up your files first! ;)

If your drive is making a loud ring then you have a very short time before it is completely dead and overly corrupted. I had an IBM Desktar 5 a couple years ago and it started to make the ringing noise and I had a week before it crapped out on me. My advice, back up the most important stuff first and do it incrementally so as not overwork or heat the drive and mess it up before you've gotten everything off.

As for IBM, depends on who you bought it from. Try the retailer first.

Have you tried just getting louder speakers for your computer? That's what I do for my car whenever it starts making louder noises. Save a bunch on repairs that way...

Seriously, your success will totally depend on whether it is an actual IBM drive, or an IBM OEM drive. In other words, if it is from IBM, or an authorized IBM reseller, either the reseller or IBM will fix it. If it is an OEM drive with the IBM label, well, IBM won't take it. IBM's take is, you are saving money by buying an OEM drive, therefore, the only way to get coverage on it is through the original seller. Just read about this in Infoworld, in case you are wondering how I know this.
