I am going to get an iPad

After playing around with one for nearly an hour at a store, here is what I think will make me run and buy one:

1) Peripheral support (USB, SD card etc)
2) Front facing camera + Skype type support (can connect to every phone, computer etc and video chat/conference)
3) Flash video

These are MUSTS, if only because Porn is sometimes only available in Flash. :whiste:

These would be nice:

Bigger screen, lighter, better battery life
Faster

All the other downsides I can now accept because this device just has so much potential it has as e-reader/photo dump/video chat/porno/hulu watching device.

Also, Android developers - if you can do the same thing, then you can have my money.

After messing around with my dad's ipad, I want a tablet, just not the current ipad. I need either a larger screen or higher res.

Mjinz, I have a hard time telling if you are joking or not. You hate Apple... so is this sarcasm? If so, you need to be clearly more sarcastic for me to grasp the joke.

1. You can buy the camera kit which enables USB and SD card support for JPG and movies. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A
It's not the generic SD card support that one might hope for, but it works pretty well.
2. You can get Skype working now... but not with a camera. I would bet this is coming in the next iPhone though.

3. You can jailbreak and install "Frash" which works fairly well, although it doesn't support all Flash pages and has a tendancy to stop working... http://github.com/comex/frash

That is so lame. A mini usb cord costs ~$2 on monoprice, and many people have tons of them lying around. Just add a usb port and you can hook up your camera easily. Nope, they're going to charge you $30 for a connector that you can lose pretty easily.

That's Apple for ya.

USB can't do what the Apple Dock Connector does. It's one connection that does multiple things.

You're trying to condone proprietary connectors??? Proprietary connectors do no good for the industry or the consumer, only the company that sells the product that it is on.

Given the improvements we've been making with HTML5 implementations, especially with the browser wars, I'm not so troubled by lack of Flash support as I used to be.

In what way? USB can provide power and data, what else do you need it to do? I have no idea what the Apple Dock Connector can do; but what else do you need? Preferably, I would like to see Light Peak replace USB and other such interfaces in the future, but for the meantime, I think USB, especially USB3.0, does a pretty good job.

The only reason why proprietary connectors exist is for more profit nothing more.

Yes, but Apple also did it because they wanted to consolidate and only wanted to put 1 port on their devices.

Also, if you use the camera connector kit, you can attach USB devices to the iPad.

so why don't we mandate universal charging plugs for laptops? because we all know paying $80 for a fucking Dell charger is ridiculous.

When people are given the opportunity to bash Apple, they will. And as much as I hate proprietary connectors, it's a lot easier to find an iPod/iPhone charger/connector than most other connectors. The only easier thing is probably a micro USB/mini USB connector.

The only reason why it's easy to find them is cus they are everywhere. That doesn't make proprietary connectors any better. Just because it's popular doesn't make it good. And Apple didn't do it cus they only wanted only one connector, Apple did it cus they have to have control over every aspect of all their devices. That's how they are and making the connector proprietary makes it even easier to do that plus makes them more money in the process. HTC did this, Motorola did this, all cellphone manufacturers did it but I'm glad MOST have moved over to micro-usb. Just because someone says something bad about something that Apple has but don't mention Apple in their post it's automatically bashing it. I'm just saying proprietary connectors suck. All I did was mention proprietary connectors and it so happens Apple has one. They all suck plain and simple.

The dock connector does have more features than plain USB (video ouput, digital audio output), but they could've made it backwards compatible with mini or micro USB, even if just for charging.

But Apple is all about proprietary stuff. No HDMI on a laptop in 2010? Displayport for their monitors instead of DVI? etc.

Small devices should all charge through micro USB, and they should come out with a standard for laptops like we have for desktops and most printers.

And who's stopping them from having both? You're argument is insane. The only purpose of leaving out a usb port was so they could charge you $30 to add one. If you can't see that, then you've hopelessly fallen under the reality distortion field.

Blasphemy! Adding USB / SD / HDMI / eSATA / etc. ports on any Apple devices would give exits for the unicorns to escape. Without the unicorns, the devices simply wouldn't work, and they definitely wouldn't be magical.

😉 Just kidding of course. I don't mind Apple devices in the slightest, but their proprietary connectors and software (iTunes) are what keep me from buying them.

To save space...

Look at their Macbook Pros and Macbooks. They needed to put as many ports as possible with as little space as possible. Why do you think they have Mini-DP and FW800?

Most people wouldn't need to have a USB port.

That was pretty good

Micro & mini USB say hi.

Just saying...

What's the point of this thread?

No, it's not sarcasm.

My hate for Apple is more sarcasm. I own and owned many Apple products.

But... they still suck because they don't make the iPad I want and their computers are all sorts of inferior and their iPod Touch is a extraneous device. That's the extent of my hate. Oh and Steve Jobs is still a d-bag. 😉

But Apple is all about proprietary stuff. No HDMI on a laptop in 2010? Displayport for their monitors instead of DVI? etc.

Their displays use displayport because their laptops do. Also if I remember correctly DP is not a proprietary connector from apple. Mini DP is but they used that to save space.

What about when laptops that were using VGA while MBP 2008 were the only ones with DVI?

I don't like proprietary connectors but the 30 pin does more. Also I can still get them from hong kong for $1. So it doesn't really bother me.
