Give the dates, there are all sorts of festivals going on during the summertime that you may be able to check out. http://www.metromix.com and go to "Events" or "Festivals" for the dates you are going to be here and you should find something. Other than that, the typical Grant Park, Millenium Park, Navy Pier, Museums (Science and Industry, Field, Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium) should keep you occupied.

Just to warn you OP, or anybody else planning on going to Chicago anytime soon... I was very disappointed in the Science and Technology museum. For people that already know a decent amount about science or technology, it's a total waste of time as it's dumbed down to crazy amounts for the general public. The exhibits weren't very good, and the only one I was interested in (german submarine) required extra money and was sold out.
The Shedd aquarium is completely amazing.
You can catch the Field Museum in the same trip, they are very close to each other.
(Set aside a whole day for the two, you want lots of time, especially in the summer it gets a bit crowded.)

Arriving tomorrow (monday the 6th) at 6:20PM at Midway from LAX.
I stay until Friday morning when I leave for Albany, NY, then on return I fly back through Chicago on the 13th.
Concerts sound like fun. I am down for deep dish pizza. I see i am not far from the Navy Pier so I guess I'll go there.
I am taking my DSLR with me. Is there any safety thing that I should be aware about. Like walkign around with the camera around my neck.

No worries about keeping your camera around your neck, as long as you are walking around during the day and in public places. If you don't mind taking some cabs to get some food here are my suggestions.
