When the speakers are turned on, there is a sound coming from them even if I am not listening to anything on them it sounds like static. Any idea what is causing it? could it be my sound card or is it the speakers? I just wanted to find out what it is before I get my new speakers (probably logitech z680's) cause if it is the sound card then thats just one more thing I have to get, its a hercules game theater xp.

Not sure of your cause, but here's a few thoughts. Interference from other electrical equipment on the same line (refregerator, heater, etc). Interference on the sound card from other things inside your case is probably possible, but I've never had it happen. Some speakers seem to pick up a hum from their own power amp. (I have Klipsch's and there was apparently a batch of them that had this problem.) I'd check the cables from the sound card to the speakers as well. Swap them out with new/other ones if possible. I bought some higher quality ones at Circuit City. Maybe backing off of the sound levels on your sound card might help.

If you have the input levels set high it can cause it. I had a hiss in my SB live value, pickup on the audio cable coming from my cd-rom drive. I put the slider down to about 1/4 and it went away. Also turn off or mute what you don't use, example mic in, aux in, line in, etc.
