I am getting a new/refurb phone tomorrow. What should I get?

My Touch Pro2 died over the weekend and will no longer turn on. I tried soft/hard resets without success.

I upgraded my SERO 500 plan to SERO Premium 500, so I'm no longer restricted on what phone I can get - the rep recommended that I pick up a refurbished phone to hold me over until my contract renewal (April), at which point I'll get a substantial discount on a new phone. Right now I'd only get $75 off retail, which makes an EVO cost $375. Nooo thanks.

I am going to try to pick up a phone at a Sprint store tomorrow (took care of the plan upgrade on the phone today, thanks to Google Talk). I'm not sure what they'll have available in store, but my online choices are here:

LG Lotus @ $49.99
LG Remarq @ $49.99
Samsung Rant @ $49.99
Sanyo SCP-3810 @ $49.99
Sanyo SCP-2700 @ $49.99
Blackberry Curve @ $79.99
Samsung Instinct s30 @ $79.99
Blackberry Tour @ $99.99

Are any of those worthwhile? It doesn't have to be too fancy, but I'd prefer a semi-smart phone. I'll be upgrading in April.

I would hunt Craigslist, but it's a little difficult to coordinate that since I am leaving tomorrow morning for a road trip to CA... :\

Only devices that work on sprint's network, right? and free from their lineup?

A lot of those look like downgrades minus the blackberries which are gonna have really low resale/desire value if you intend to sell/give them away in the future..,

You should try talking to the CSR, have always read success stories of people who managed to get unlisted upgrades by talking to the folks.

At least aim for an Evo/Evo shift/nexus at the least. 😛
It'll be yesteryear's tech but better than any of that crap lineup, and you can get them for like around $200s price range straight bought out on ebay or elsewhere.

i wouldnt want any of those phones. i would get an evo or another android phone from craigs. i use verizon so im not that familiar with sprint phones. cowboom also has a good selection of phones but im not sure of the quality of their stuff. i think palm pre plus is around $80. arent windows phone 7 phones around $350 brand new?

Call and threaten to cancel. Retentions can easily offer you $75 early upgrade reset, they do it all the time between 1-2 years. If you don't get what you want, call back. Talk to them about prepad services and how you can get a better phone than what they are offering and it will be cheaper, so unless they can offer you a better phone than prepaid why would you want them? You can prob get that upgrade reset for free with a few tries.

I'm mid-contract - I can't cancel. I can't just get something online..I'm leaving in a matter of minutes, and I have no phone. 😛

That will be a great road trip, New Hampshire to CA? I'm jealous.

I would drag out an old flip phone and re-activate it. Or maybe buy the cheapest thing they have. That will get you by until your subsidized upgrade in six months.

I didn't say cancel, I said threaten to cancel. And yes you can cancel, in fact it will cost you around $70?

A 15 minute call to retentions by asking to cancel and they could reset your upgrade and you can upgrade in store. Sucks you waited a few days because this could have been done earlier and you could have had a free phone. And trust me it works, I just threatended to cancel and got 2 phones on my line that got their upgrade reset. 🙂

Actually you can cancel. They are upping one of there fees and you can get out ETF free. Call and tell them that you want to cancel due to the $1.150 increase in the Administration Fee and they will do it without arguing. Go to the store of the carrier of you choice and port your number in.

That said, the only thing on that list is I would touch is the Tour. I had one a couple years ago and it's not a bad phone as long as you get one that the trackball works for more than a week and the screen isn't screwed. Use Opera Mini and the web isn't to bad.

The Tour is the best of that bunch, although it is over two years old now. The rest of those aren't worth your time. You might also check eBay, could potentially find something a little higher end. If you liked the physical design of your Touch Pro 2, I bet you could pick up an Arrive used for a decent price.

Sprint is raising their administrative fee on September 9th. This allows you to get out of your contract and port out or just stay. They will probably also try to keep you and offer you an upgrade if you say you are going to switch. Be sure to mention that you broke your phone and need a new one so you might aswell switch service providers. If they know you want a new phone and that's your main complaint they will easily offer you a new one.

Also, if you were on the Premier thing from Sprint before and had your early upgrade taken away when they cancelled the premier, you can call and get it back.

I tried a few weeks ago and almost got it, but they said I can't get out of my contract until the fee goes into effect. So I am waiting to call back. Other people have been able to get out already.

Heh, as I was about to walk out the door, I tried the power button again and the phone booted up. So, I'm just not going to let it die until I get a new one, but the time pressure is gone.

I may try to get out of my contract due to the fee above, then re-up online for a new EVO at $99 (they're going for $200+ on CL). I don't mind the contract so much - I have a REALLY good deal with SERO Premium (now have unlimited any mobile to mobile, on top of unlimited data/text/etc at $40/mo).

Getting out of contract doesn't = get out of upgrade cycle. They are seperate timeframes and you need to be cancelled at least 45 days before you can resignup /w sprint. You would also lose SERO. If and when yo decide you want to upgrade... call retentions and threaten to cancel and ask about them reseting your upgrade time.

Ah, I wasn't aware that getting out of the contract wouldn't change the upgrade cycle. You're right, I'd lose SERO, which is why I'm not even going to threaten to cancel...I've heard they're usually happy to cancel SERO customers.

I already have the $75 upgrade credit, but that gives me a $375 EVO. A full upgrade credit (April) gives me a $100 EVO. I found one on CL for $180, so I might just buy a used phone and call it a day.

Buy a used phone and stay out of contract at that price. Keep in mind that Sprint has raised their ETF's to $350 for new contracts on smartphones.

I picked up an HTC EVO 4G from Craigslist a few hours ago. $150 with original box, charger, spare battery, gel case and screen protector. It's so much faster than what I'm used to...

I'll stay out of contract and go month-to-month and upgrade via Craigslist whenever I need a new phone. It seems to work out well that way. 😛

I swear craigslist is the way to go now a days. You can normally get good phones for cheap. I got a damn near new DROID x with clean esn for $120, my area always has good phones cheap

Just make sure to meet at a Sprint store or Verizon store and check the ESN/MEID so it is not stolen. There are lot of stolen phones which cannot be activated.
