I am going to be buying a new computer within the next few months and I wanted to get some opinions about some hardware. I have about 1000-1,400 to spend U.S. dollars. I also planned on buying it from a website such as Ibuypower.com or one of the others, either that or just building it myself.

First off I am looking into which processor to get. I will be using the computer primarily for gaming, internet use, dvd authoring, photoshop work, and computer programming. I know that Intel is rolling out there Duo processors and I am kind of out of the loop as to what AMD has been up to. I also know that it has always been a subject of debate as to which processor is the best for gaming. SO, which processor in your opinion would be the better choice, and Intel Duo or AMD's newest chip?

Next I am wondering what videocard(s) to get. I currently have an Nvidia 6800GT. I have seen that some setups are going to a dual videocard system which I was wondering about. One of the configurations I saw had a 7900GT or a 7950GX while the other system had 2x 6800GT's. SO, is it better to get two lower powered cards like the dual 6800GT's or to get one majorly powerful card like the 7950 GX? After deciding that, which company, ATI or Nvidia has the current best cards?

I really appreciate any help that you guys can offer me with this. I have looked at many many tests and comparisons on the net but a decent amount of them are conflicting and I still trust user opinions ala a message board such as this over the opinions of someone from Cnet, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Conroe is generally faster than X2/Opteron

A 7950 GX2 will spank the hell out a 6800GT SLI setup. I personally perfer single card solutions (GX2 counts as single card IMO)

Also, keep in mind G80 is only about a month away

The G80? I'm guessing its one of the first DX10 cards? If so I would definitely want to get that.

Intel core 2 duo e6600 and overclock it. -320.00$
Asus P5w DH Deluxe motherboard - 220.00$
Corsair Twin 2x2048-pc2-8500C5 Ram- 300.00$
Nvidia 8800GTS video card when it comes out in a month or so- 450.00$

This is a high end system!
Could get cheaper ram.
You might need a new power supply also. 650 watts with 40 amp 12v rail

Edit : mabe in a month the prices will drop a little also.
Don't forget your copy of windows Vista

I always think a higher quality power supply is always necessary because you don't want to underpower or have irregular voltage your stuff and have it crap out on you

Are their any confirmed specifications on the Geforce 8xxx series? Any price point? What is ATI coming out with to combat the Nvidia card that is close because the R600 doesnt even hold a candle to the supposed 8xxx series.
